The story behind the Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal, often hailed as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is a monumental testament to LOVE. Commissioned by Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, who tragically died during childbirth, this architectural marvel took over 40 years to complete.

Despite its beauty, Shah Jahan's final days were marked by tragedy. His son Aurangzeb seized the throne, imprisoning him in the Agra Fort, where he could only gaze at the Taj Mahal from a distance. It wasn't until Shah Jahan's death that he was laid to rest beside Mumtaz, finally reunited.

As we stood before this masterpiece, we echoed the sentiment of the Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore, who described the Taj Mahal as "a tear on the cheek of eternity." Its ethereal beauty is a poignant reminder of love that transcends time.

The magic of sunrise at the Taj Mahal

While sunset casts a warm glow over the Taj, it's during sunrise that it reveals its truest beauty. We arrived early, braving the crowds and heading straight for the west gate, known for offering the most breathtaking views of the sunrise illuminating the Taj Mahal.

As the first rays of sunlight pierced through the mist, we were left speechless. In that moment, the arduous journey of 16 hours by train, the sweltering heat, and the chaotic traffic of India all faded into insignificance. The sheer beauty was worth every discomfort.

Standing there, we felt incredibly fortunate to witness such a moment, encapsulating the essence of travel: experiencing the extraordinary.

Exploring the Agra Fort

Reluctantly tearing ourselves away from the Taj Mahal, we hopped into a tuk-tuk and made our way to the Agra Fort. Initially built for military purposes, this stunning structure evolved into a royal palace, showcasing exquisite architecture and rich history.

The fort's intricate designs and lavish interiors transported us to another era. At times, we felt as if we were wandering the streets of Córdoba or Granada. However, the stunning views of the Taj Mahal from the fort grounded us in our Indian reality.

Discovering the Baby Taj

During our stay, we also visited the Itimad-ud-Daulah, affectionately known as the “Baby Taj.” While this gem would steal the spotlight in any other country, it often remains overshadowed by its grander counterpart.

Despite its smaller size, the intricate inlay work and serene gardens make it a worthy destination. We were delighted by the playful squirrels and the cheeky monkeys, adding a touch of liveliness to the serene ambiance.

Practical information for visiting Agra

Visiting the Taj Mahal

The gates to the Taj Mahal open around 6 a.m., but the entrance allows visitors only after sunrise. We opted for the East Gate, and at 6:20 a.m., we were among the first twenty visitors inside. Free electric buses run from the parking area to the Taj entrance (approximately 600 meters). The entrance fee is 1,100 INR, which includes a bottle of water and shoe covers. If you purchase your ticket for the Agra Fort on the same day, you can save some money—250 INR instead of 300 INR—but don't discard your Taj ticket as both are required for entry.

Getting around with tuk-tuks

We found tuk-tuks to be a convenient way to explore Agra. For about 300 INR, we secured a round trip that included stops at the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. The day before, we used the same tuk-tuk to visit the Baby Taj (110 INR entry) and the Mehtab Bagh (100 INR entry) for stunning sunset views.

Where to stay

We stayed at Pyrenees, a cozy accommodation in a residential area with various hostels, conveniently located near the East Gate of the Taj Mahal. Check out our detailed review for more insights.

Dining experiences

Our culinary adventures included delightful meals shared with Yusuf, Bilhal, and their charming family at Bob Marley restaurant, part of their homestay, “Friends Paying Guesthouse.” The food was exquisite, but the warmth and hospitality of the family truly made our experience memorable. We can't wait to welcome them to Spain or Italy!

How to reach Agra

Traveling from Amritsar to Agra was an adventure in itself. We took a sleeper class train that lasted 16 hours for around 330 INR. Upon arrival at the station, we found a prepaid autorickshaw booth. Initially quoted 150 INR to our hostel, we managed to negotiate it down to 120 INR. It's advisable to head to the main street to find more tuk-tuks to negotiate with.

A memorable journey awaits those who venture to Agra, where every corner tells a story and every moment is enriched by the echoes of love and history. To delve deeper into the wonders of Agra, check out this captivating video that showcases the Taj Mahal like never before:
