Discovering the Rich Flavors of Tashkent

Tashkent's culinary landscape is a blend of traditional Uzbek dishes and modern influences, showcasing the country's cultural heritage. The city's restaurants offer a variety of options to suit all tastes and budgets. From street food stalls serving quick bites to elegant dining establishments, every culinary experience here tells a story of history and tradition.

Uzbekistan's geographical location along the ancient Silk Road has played a crucial role in shaping its cuisine, which is characterized by bold flavors, aromatic spices, and hearty ingredients. A few dishes that you absolutely must try include:

  • Plov: The national dish, a flavorful rice pilaf cooked with lamb, carrots, and spices.
  • Lagman: A delicious noodle soup, often served with chunks of meat and fresh vegetables.
  • Somsa: Savory pastries filled with meat or vegetables, perfect for a quick snack.
  • Manti: Steamed dumplings filled with spiced meat, ideal for sharing.
  • Shashlik: Grilled skewers of marinated meat, a popular dish at any barbecue.

1. Plov Center (Beshqozon)

In Tashkent, every neighborhood boasts its own Plov Center where diners can enjoy this beloved national dish in massive portions. Plov, made from rice, meat, and vegetables, is not just a meal; it's a cultural experience. At Beshqozon, the plov is prepared in traditional style, featuring tender lamb, aromatic spices, and a unique blend of ingredients.

We were pleasantly surprised by the flavor and the generous servings. The price was also incredibly reasonable, costing us around 24,000 som, equivalent to just €2. A budget-friendly option that doesn't skimp on taste!

2. Shashlik Somsa

Located conveniently next to our hotel, Shashlik Somsa became our go-to spot for dinner one evening. Their specialty, the somsa, is an irresistible pastry, stuffed with hearty meat, and comes in various forms, including a burrito-like version. The extensive menu also features an array of shashlik options, which are grilled skewers of marinated meat cooked to perfection.

Tip: Don’t overorder! The portions are substantial, and one somsa of each type is often more than enough. Our meal, which included ample food and two half-liter beers, cost around €18, and we took home leftovers.

3. Quadro

For a more upscale dining experience, Quadro stands out with its high-quality food, attentive service, and stylish ambiance. Although prices are slightly higher than average in Tashkent, the quality justifies the expense. We indulged in a 400g fillet mignon, pasta bolognese, and refreshing beverages for approximately €25. The restaurant also offers sushi, making it a versatile choice for various palates.

While we recommend Quadro wholeheartedly, it's worth noting that this is more of a special occasion restaurant as it was among the pricier options we encountered during our travels in Uzbekistan.

4. Anor

If you want to savor another traditional Uzbek dish, Anor is the place to go for lagman. This hearty noodle soup, filled with vibrant vegetables and tender meat, is a testament to the comforting flavors of Uzbek cuisine. The cost is about 30,000 som, which is roughly €2.5, making it both delicious and affordable.

Don't forget to bring your Revolut card (with a €10 bonus), as it’s the best option to avoid extra fees while paying or withdrawing money abroad.

5. Afsona

For a contemporary twist on traditional Uzbek dishes, Afsona offers a diverse menu that features both cold and hot appetizers, soups, and substantial main courses. The restaurant prides itself on giving classic dishes a modern flair. Be sure to try their potato somsa and manti, as well as their kebabs, which are always a hit. And don’t skip dessert—it's a delightful way to round off your meal!
