Exploring the Sacred Route of Churches

Ohrid is often referred to as the ‘Jerusalem of the Slavs’ due to its remarkable number of churches. While it’s said that there were once 365 churches in Ohrid—one for each day of the year—today, visitors can still find many stunning examples of religious architecture. Here are a few highlights:

  • Saint John at Kaneo: Undoubtedly the most photographed site in Ohrid, this church sits perched on a cliff overlooking the lake, providing breathtaking views that are unforgettable.
  • Church of Saint Clement and Panteleimon: This church has a fascinating history, having been a Christian basilica, a Byzantine church, and even a mosque during Ottoman rule. It houses the remains of Saint Clement, credited with creating the Cyrillic alphabet.
  • Catedral de Santa Sofía: Known for its stunning gallery of arches and remarkable frescoes from the 11th to 13th centuries, this cathedral has a storied past, having been converted into a mosque at one point. The frescoes were rediscovered during renovations in the 1950s.

Strolling Through the Historic Old Town

Although Ohrid is not particularly large, its historic center is filled with intriguing sites. Once the capital of Macedonia, Ohrid is among the oldest settlements in Europe. As you wander through its charming streets, you’ll encounter:

  • Ancient amphitheaters and well-preserved Byzantine churches.
  • Picturesque houses with whitewashed walls and cocoa-colored window frames, adorned with vibrant flowers.
  • The lively presence of cats, which adds to the city’s charm as they lounge in the sun.

Take your time to soak in the atmosphere and discover hidden gems tucked away in the narrow alleys.

Ascending to the Fortress of Samuel

While it may not be the most captivating castle you’ve ever encountered, the fortress of Samuel provides a unique perspective of Ohrid. The sweeping views from the top are worth the climb. Don’t miss the imposing walls that proudly display the red and yellow flag of Macedonia—an iconic sight that encapsulates the country’s spirit.

Walking and Sailing on the Lake

Lake Ohrid is shared between Macedonia and Albania, with one-third belonging to the former. Renowned for being one of Europe’s clearest and oldest lakes, it reaches depths of nearly 300 meters. You can enjoy the lake in several ways:

  • Stroll along the scenic wooden promenade that hugs the shore.
  • Hire a local boatman for a short cruise on the lake, which typically costs around €5 for a 30-minute trip. We took a ride from the Saint John at Kaneo pier to the village for about €3.
  • Explore the surrounding natural beauty and relax by the lakeside, soaking up the tranquil environment.

Taking Time to Relax

After a full day of exploration, Ohrid is the perfect place to unwind. Here’s how we enjoyed our downtime:

  • Strolling through the Turkish bazaar and sampling local delicacies like baklava and Turkish tea.
  • Sipping coffee on lakeside terraces while enjoying the stunning views.
  • Photographing the vibrant streets adorned with hanging peppers, a local culinary staple.
  • Indulging in delicious grilled chicken and ćevapi, a local favorite.
  • Playing with the friendly local cats and soaking in the laid-back atmosphere.
  • Visiting the bustling central market to experience local life.

Our adventure in Ohrid culminated in a bus ride (which turned into an unexpected taxi experience) to Bitola, followed by a scenic train journey to Skopje, where we continued our exploration of Macedonia.

  • How to get to Ohrid from Berat by bus via Elbasan: We took a bus from the Berat station at around 8:30-9 am heading towards Elbasan for 350 LEK per person, which took about three hours. From there, we caught a shared van to the Macedonia border for 450 LEK, although we were charged 600 LEK.
