Exploring the Castillo de Monterreal

The first sight that will captivate you upon arrival is the silhouette of the Castillo de Monterreal, perched atop a promontory overlooking the bay. Construction began in the 12th century, but it was during the 16th century that it took on its current form. This elevated fortress once protected the city from potential pirate attacks and invasions.

In its heyday, Baiona boasted one of the most prosperous ports in the region. Thanks to a decree by Juan II of Castile, Baiona and A Coruña were the only Galician ports permitted to trade with foreign powers.

Today, the castle houses a National Parador. If you have the chance to stay there, don’t hesitate! Regardless, we recommend walking the Paseo del Monte Boi, a scenic trail around the castle offering breathtaking views, and climbing up to the Torre do Príncipe to witness an unforgettable sunset.

Delving into the Puerto de Baiona

The Puerto de Baiona is also renowned for a significant historical event. On March 1, 1493, the arrival of a caravel would change the world forever. When La Pinta docked, its captain, Martín Alonso Pinzón, announced the discovery of the New World. Can you imagine the astonished faces of those who heard the news?

At the harbor, you can see a replica of the caravel La Pinta, which you can board for just €2 and get a glimpse into the lives of those adventurous sailors.

Fun fact: Along with news from America, the crew of La Pinta returned with gold, previously unknown foods (such as maize, yuca, beans, and peppers), and plants (cotton, tobacco), among other treasures.

Each year, the town hosts the “Fiesta de la Arribada,” a festival celebrating that historic day, where everyone dresses in period costumes. More info

Discovering the Casa de la Navegación

For those wanting to dive deeper into this historical episode and the maritime history of Baiona, a visit to the Casa de la Navegación is a must. This small museum houses intriguing artifacts, including shipwreck remnants and ancient documents, even letters from the Catholic Monarchs.

Entry costs €2, or you can purchase a combined ticket for the museum and La Pinta for only €3.

Enjoying the Beaches of Baiona

Between the castle peninsula and the harbor lies a stunning emerald beach: Playa de la Ribeira, the most central and beautiful of all. If you’re looking for variety, consider these other beaches in Baiona: Playa de la Concheira (or Cuncheira), which is livelier, and Playa de la Barbiera.

Nearby, you’ll find Playa de Santa Marta, Playa Ladeira, and Playa América. As you can see, Baiona is a popular summer destination!

Wandering Through Baiona's Historic Center

Getting lost in the medieval streets of Baiona’s historic center is another essential activity. Here, amidst lively squares and bars, you'll discover gems like the Capilla de Santa Liberata, in the Plateresque style, the beautiful former Collegiate Church of Santa María adorned with a Romanesque rose window, and the Capilla de la Misericordia, which houses a beautifully crafted wooden altarpiece.

Where to Eat in Baiona

Feeling peckish? We took a delightful break at “La Taberna del Pintor,” where the daily menu costs €12.90 and includes a starter, main course, bread, drink, and dessert or coffee. We sampled spinach croquettes and a piquillo pepper toast with belly of tuna to start, followed by beef meatballs in mushroom sauce and grilled squid as our main. The tiramisu for dessert was heavenly. We would gladly return!

Strolling Along the Paseo Marítimo

To help digest your meal, there’s no better way than to stroll along the Paseo Marítimo (or at least part of it). The views of the harbor are spectacular, and breathing in the salty sea breeze is a luxury you’ll cherish. Want to take it a step further? Consider a sailing adventure in the Ría de Vigo that includes a mussel tasting!

Relaxing at Paseo Pinzón

Continue along the Paseo Pinzón, where you can take a moment to rest on a bench overlooking the sea. Here, you’ll also find a statue that gazes longingly at the waves, a fitting tribute to the maritime heritage of Baiona.

Exploring the Parque de la Palma

Another lovely spot for a relaxing stroll is the Parque de la Palma, the largest green space in the city, located right next to the castle. This park is perfect for unwinding in nature amidst picturesque surroundings.

Ascending Monte Sansón

Before you leave, make sure to hike up Monte Sansón, where you can find one of the city’s symbols: the Virgin of the Rock, a stunning 15-meter statue made of granite and marble. Although I missed this hike due to an unfortunate incident, if you’re less clumsy than I am (which I’m sure you are), you’ll find a spiral staircase leading to her arm, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the town and the sea.
