Mysore, final destination in Karnataka
As we journey through India, Mysore emerges as a hidden gem, a city steeped in history and culture, waiting to be explored. With its magnificent architecture, colorful markets, and rich traditions, Mysore captivates the heart and soul of every traveler who steps foot in this enchanting city.
After spending a few productive days in Bangalore, we decided it was time for a change of scenery. Armed with samosas and a train ticket, we swiftly made our way to Mysore. The approach to the city was quite an experience; through the train window, we spotted vibrant, painted cows and sheep adorned in fluorescent colors—pink, yellow, and orange. It was a sight that left us awestruck, and we later learned that this unique practice occurs once a year during a local festival, serving both decorative and practical purposes to ward off parasites. Yet, our true purpose for visiting was to behold the famed Mysore Palace.
A Glimpse into Mysore Palace
Mysore may not win any awards for picturesque streets or bustling tourism, but our excitement was palpable as we approached the Mysore Palace. At first glance, it might seem like just another large palace, but the real treasure lies within its walls. The Durbar Halls, where the Maharaja once convened with dignitaries and citizens alike, are nothing short of spectacular. The intricate decor and historical significance are truly a feast for the eyes.
Photography is prohibited inside the palace, preserving its mystique, but the memories are etched in our minds. The grandeur of the halls, adorned with stunning artworks and exquisite furnishings, is undoubtedly one of the most incredible sights we've encountered on our travels.
Exploring the Vibrant Markets
If strolling through Mysore’s streets is less than pleasant, visiting the Devaraja Market is an invigorating experience. Here, colorful stalls are organized by type, showcasing everything from fresh fruits to fragrant flowers, incense, and vibrant powders. It’s a sensory delight that draws you in with its bustling atmosphere.
- Fruits: bananas, coconuts, and more, each displayed with care.
- Floral offerings: baskets overflowing with marigolds and jasmine.
- Incense and perfumes: the air is filled with exotic scents.
- Colorful powders: used for festive celebrations and religious rituals.
Interestingly, outside the market, you might find vendors selling winter clothing even in the heat of summer—after all, it is winter in some parts of India!
Historical and Cultural Sites
After indulging in a hearty pizza, we decided to visit the St. Philomena’s Cathedral, a beautiful church surrounded by schools and playgrounds filled with laughter. It’s a serene spot to appreciate the architectural beauty and the local culture.
While there, we encountered the most adorable sheep, affectionately dubbed the "fluffiest sheep in the world," adding a touch of whimsy to our exploration. Our day was coming to a close, but we had one last adventure in mind: a trek up Chamundi Hill.
Chamundi Hill and Its Temples
The following day, we planned to ascend Chamundi Hill, famed for its temple and stunning views of Mysore. Although we intended to walk down the more than 1,000 steps, we found ourselves lacking the motivation that morning. Instead, we opted to venture back to the city, soaking in the sights of mosques, local sweet shops (a must-stop for gulab jamun!), and the everyday life of Mysore residents.
As we made our way to the train station, we encountered a tapestry of daily life: sadhus, friendly bus drivers, and vendors engaged in lively conversations. The vibrant spirit of Mysore was palpable, and as we boarded our train for the next leg of our adventure, we felt enriched by our experiences in this historical city.

How to Get There
Traveling from Bangalore to Mysore is convenient; we caught a train at 11:30 AM, which took less than three hours. Our second-class tickets, complete with numbered seats, cost only 80 INR each. Upon arrival, a tuk-tuk ride to our hotel was an additional 30 INR.
Where to Stay
We chose to stay at the MTR Residency, a comfortable option that provided us with easy access to the city's attractions.
Must-See Attractions
- Mysore Palace: Entry costs 250 INR. While we attempted to secure a student discount, we sadly had no luck. The best entrance is through the southern gate, and the palace gardens are free to explore.
- Chamundi Hill: Take bus 201 from the city’s bus station for 30 INR, which drops you off at the top. For the return trip, a local bus without air conditioning offers the same route at half the price.
- St. Philomena’s Cathedral: An architectural marvel that’s worth a visit while exploring the city’s cultural sites.
