2. Palacete de las Mendoza

Your walking tour should start at the Palacete de las Mendoza, a stunning building that houses the Tourist Information Office. Built in the 19th century by architect Alejandro Rodríguez Sesmero, this was the first building in the city equipped with running water.

The name references the sisters Concepción and María Mendoza, who were reportedly well-connected in society but sold the property for a lifelong rent. The building eventually came under the ownership of the Diputación after the sisters passed away in 1971.

3. Basilica of Santa María la Mayor

Pontevedra may not have a cathedral, but it does boast a Royal Basilica, making it a significant religious site. Constructed in the 16th century, this architectural masterpiece features Gothic elements alongside Manueline and Plateresque styles. Its grand facade is a sight to behold, and the interior, with its three naves and stunning ribbed vault, is equally impressive.

Be sure to visit the Christ of Good Voyage statue, a beloved figure among local fishermen, and if you're feeling adventurous, climb the Bell Tower for breathtaking city views (100 steps for €1).

4. Santuario da Virxe da Peregrina

This sanctuary is the most iconic landmark in Pontevedra, renowned for its scallop-shaped design, a symbol of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. Dedicated to the Virxe da Peregrina, the patron saint of the province, this church is a must-visit for its architectural beauty and historical significance.

The prominent Virgin figure stands out on the gothic-style facade, and entry is free, so don’t miss this gem!

5. Mercado Municipal

A visit to Pontevedra wouldn't be complete without exploring the bustling Municipal Market, located along the banks of the Lérez River. This vibrant market features a variety of fresh produce, especially seafood, which is a staple of Galician cuisine.

Dining at the Mercado Municipal

In addition to shopping, the upper floor has been transformed into a gourmet dining area where you can savor everything from traditional Galician dishes to poke bowls and hamburgers. A unique option allows you to purchase fresh seafood from market vendors and have it cooked for you upstairs for around €4-5. Don't miss the glass-enclosed dining area with stunning river views and the nearby O Burgo Bridge.

6. Puente de O Burgo

Pontevedra is home to several bridges crossing the Lérez River, but the Puente de O Burgo is the most enchanting. With its origins tracing back to Roman times and later renovations during the Middle Ages, this bridge has witnessed countless pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.

We recommend taking a leisurely stroll along the river, heading towards the Illa das Esculturas (Illa do Covo), an island adorned with sculptures by various Galician artists—an original and artistic highlight of your visit.

7. Praza da Ferrería

As the liveliest square in Pontevedra, Praza da Ferrería boasts stunning architecture, including the Convent of San Francisco, the aforementioned Virgen Peregrina church, and the picturesque Castro San Pedro Gardens. Don’t forget to snap a photo with the iconic blue "PONTEVEDRA" letters!

The square's name originates from the forges that once occupied this area, where blacksmiths crafted their wares.

8. Praza de España

Praza de España is one of the busiest squares in the city, surrounded by important administrative buildings like the Subdelegation of the Government, the beautiful City Hall, and the Pontevedra Provincial Council. This square serves as a vital link between the historic center and the Alameda park designed by Sesmero, a green space ideal for leisurely strolls.

At the park's entrance, you’ll find the monument to the Heroes of Pontesampaio, commemorating their bravery during the War of Independence against the French.

9. Ruins of Santo Domingo

The old Convent of Santo Domingo, now in ruins, is a fascinating site to explore. Dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries, remnants of the original Gothic structure remain, including the main chapel and some lateral chapels.

After the monks left the convent during the mid-19th century, it fell into obscurity. Today, these ruins are part of the Pontevedra Museum, where you can find intriguing artifacts such as sarcophagi and coats of arms. Remember to check the visiting hours before heading over.
