Best areas to stay in Zagreb

When visiting the capital of Croatia for a few days, you’ll likely want accommodation in one of two key areas: Donji Grad (Lower Town) or Gornji Grad (Upper Town). These neighborhoods are perfect for sightseeing and exploring the city.

Don't forget to book your spot on a free tour of Zagreb to discover the city with a fun local guide!

Let’s delve into the highlights of each neighborhood:

1. Gornji Grad (Upper Town)

This is the oldest part of Zagreb, characterized by cobblestone streets, historic churches, and stunning viewpoints. Here, you’ll find the famous Dolac Market, the Cathedral, St. Mark's Church, and breathtaking views from the Lotrščak Tower. It’s a picturesque area, tranquil at night, radiating a unique charm.

During our stay, we found a gem just a step away from this area: the 4 City Windows B&B. We would definitely choose it again. Here are some pros and cons:

  • Advantages: Lots of charm, great views, peaceful atmosphere.
  • Disadvantages: Higher prices, steep streets (be cautious with luggage).

2. Donji Grad (Lower Town)

This area is the most vibrant, bustling with urban life: shops, restaurants, cafes, and museums. Key highlights include the famous Ilica Street, the Ban Jelačić Square, and parks like Zrinjevac. This neighborhood is ideal if you want to soak up the local atmosphere while having everything at your fingertips.

  • Advantages: Super central, lively, well-connected.
  • Disadvantages: Depending on the street, it can be somewhat noisy if you’re looking for complete tranquility.

Our hotel in Zagreb: 4 City Windows B&B

Located just steps from the Upper Town, this charming accommodation features only four rooms, making it an intimate choice. Each room is uniquely decorated, and we were lucky enough to stay in the “Art Room”, a vibrant space filled with original artworks that captivated us as soon as we walked in.

Aside from its aesthetic appeal, the room was super comfortable: it boasted a large bed (the kind you never want to leave), air conditioning, TV, Wi-Fi, and a private bathroom. As its name suggests, one of the four windows offered stunning views of the heart of Zagreb.

The communal area is another highlight. The dining room resembles a museum hall, showcasing unique pieces, antique cameras, curiosities, and even the famous heart of Zagreb, a symbol of the city. Here, you can enjoy a hearty breakfast and unwind with tea or simply soak in the special atmosphere.

However, what truly made our stay unforgettable were Tanja and Ivo. They welcomed us like family from the moment we arrived, offering hospitality that is hard to find: helping us plan our route to Istria, sharing travel stories, laughter, and even deep conversations that made us feel like friends.

If you’re looking for a place to stay in Zagreb, 4 City Windows B&B is a fantastic choice.

Additional accommodation options: Airbnb and Booking

If the B&B vibe doesn’t resonate with you, consider exploring alternatives such as Airbnb and Booking.com. Both platforms offer a plethora of choices, from cozy apartments in the heart of the city to unique stays in quiet neighborhoods.

On Airbnb, you can find options that fit your budget and preferences, whether you’re looking for a chic apartment with a view or a traditional house with local character. Here are some tips for booking:

  • Read reviews carefully to ensure quality.
  • Check the location on the map to ensure it meets your needs.
  • Look for hosts with superhost status for added reliability.

Meanwhile, Booking.com provides a wide range of hotels and guesthouses with flexible cancellation policies. You can filter your search based on price, amenities, and guest ratings, making it easy to find the perfect fit for your stay.
