1. Discovering Capileira in a Day

Starting your exploration of Capileira is best done on foot. As you wander through its narrow, winding streets, you’ll quickly realize that the village is small enough to navigate without a map. However, there are several must-visit spots to include in your journey:

  • Church of Santa María de la Cabeza: This charming church features a beautiful Baroque altarpiece, making it a significant cultural landmark.
  • Casa-Museum of Pedro Antonio de Alarcón: Dedicated to the 19th-century writer who fell in love with the region, this museum provides insight into traditional Alpujarra life.
  • Plaza del Calvario: Although its name suggests a somber place, this square is a peaceful spot to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

What truly enhances your visit is the leisurely stroll through the village. Take in the sights of the traditional tinaos (the covered alleyways typical of the area), enjoy mesmerizing views from various miradores, and admire the unique chimney designs that characterize the architecture here. Don't miss the charming whitewashed houses adorned with vibrant flowers, and the refreshing fountains scattered throughout the village, such as the Fuente del Carril and Fuente La Pileta.

Local Legend: The Moorish Princess

A fascinating local legend tells of a Moorish princess who, after her death, roams the streets of the Barranco de Poqueira. It is said that if you encounter her spirit at sunset and return her greeting, she might take away your dreams. This enchanting tale adds to the mystical charm of Capileira.

Interestingly, the name "Capileira" derives from the Latin term "capillaris," meaning "hair," likely referencing the village's high altitude or the surrounding mountain peaks.

2. Where to Stay

If you’re planning to spend the night in Capileira, we recommend exploring options like the Hotel Rural Alfajía de Antonio. This cozy hotel is well-maintained and offers a lovely terrace with stunning views. The friendly owners add a personal touch to your stay, making it even more enjoyable.

3. Where to Eat

During our visit, many establishments were closed, so we opted for a hearty plato alpujarreño at Cascapeñas for just 10€. The food was delicious, and the service was top-notch. We've also heard rave reviews about El Corral del Castaño and Jardín de los Sabores, which offers a fusion of Indian cuisine and Alpujarra specialties. We can’t wait to try them on our next visit!

If you prefer a self-catering option or want to enjoy a meal on your terrace, the local supermarket Covirán is a great place to stock up on essentials. Additionally, La Mandràgora offers high-quality local products that are worth checking out.

4. Parking in Capileira

Finding a place to park in Capileira is convenient, with several free parking lots available. You can leave your car at the entrance of the village and begin your exploration of the cobblestone streets. There is also a designated area for larger vehicles and campers at the north end of the village.

5. Hiking Adventures

As previously mentioned, Capileira is surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, situated at the foot of Mulhacén (3,479 meters) and Pico Veleta (3,398 meters), which are the highest peaks in the Iberian Peninsula. This prime location makes it a hiker's paradise, with numerous trails to explore. Here are some of the best hiking routes:

  • Descent to Puente Abuchite: A short trail leading down to the river Poqueira, this approximately 1.5 km path provides stunning views and takes about 30 minutes to descend. For a longer adventure, continue to La Cebadilla for a circular route of about 9 km. More info.
  • Ascent to Mirador Puerto Molina: Starting from the Hoya del Portillo parking area, this 6 km round trip offers breathtaking views of the region. More info.
  • Mulhacén Summit: For the more adventurous hikers, the trek to Mulhacén from La Cebadilla, passing by the Poqueira Refuge, is a challenging 25 km route with a 2,000-meter elevation gain. More info.

If you're interested in hiking but prefer a guided experience, consider joining a tour from Pampaneira, such as this Sierra Nevada hiking excursion that covers distances between 6 to 9 km.
