A Brief History of Edzná

Edzná's name originates from the word Ytzná, which refers to the Maya people known as the itzáes. In essence, Edzná translates to "House of the Itzá." This ancient city has been inhabited since around 400 B.C., reaching its peak between A.D. 400 and 1000 when it boasted a population of up to 25,000 inhabitants. During this time, Edzná served as a capital city, exerting significant influence over the region that is now Campeche.

A critical factor in Edzná's longevity and prosperity was its water management system. The ancient Maya engineered an elaborate network of channels and reservoirs, extending up to six kilometers, which allowed for efficient irrigation and sustainable agriculture.

To symbolize its political, economic, and religious power, monumental structures such as the Great Acropolis and the impressive Temple of the Five Stories were built. However, the city began to decline and was ultimately abandoned around A.D. 1450.

Edzná is located approximately 55 km from San Francisco de Campeche. During our visit in November 2018, road construction extended our travel time to about an hour and fifteen minutes, but once the roads are improved, expect to reach the site in less than an hour.

Visiting Edzná is quite affordable, with a total entrance fee of just 90 pesos. Unlike many archaeological sites in Mexico, there is no additional government fee, making it an economical option for travelers.

Must-See Attractions in Edzná

While visiting Edzná, there are several key structures that you absolutely cannot miss:

» Platform of the Knives

This platform consisted of several vaulted rooms built on a raised base. Small staircases are located in the center of each side, and remnants of columns can still be seen at the top. The name originates from a discovery of obsidian knives found during an archaeological exploration.

» Nohochná

Translating to "The Big House," Nohochná is an enormous stone platform measuring 135 meters long, 31 meters wide, and 9 meters high, marking the eastern boundary of the main plaza. Its impressive staircase of 15 steps likely served as seating for events held in the plaza. Visitors can climb to the top for an initial view of the site.

» Ballgame Court

This is where the traditional Maya ballgame took place, a sport rich in cultural significance. The rules varied, but the objective was to pass a rubber ball through stone hoops without using hands or arms. Edzná's court still features remnants of one of these hoops, along with areas that were likely used for changing and housing the idols associated with the game.

» Temple of Masks

Upon exploration, archaeologists unearthed two beautifully preserved stucco masks in this small temple. These masks represent the sun god and are richly decorated, showcasing a palette that predominantly features red. Given the fragility of stucco, these artifacts are invaluable examples of Maya artistry.

» Small Acropolis

Built on a square base measuring around 70 meters per side, this area consists of four of the oldest buildings in Edzná. Visitors can ascend these structures, which, while set amidst trees, provide a glimpse of the architectural sophistication to come.

» Great Acropolis

The Great Acropolis is the largest and most important architectural complex in Edzná, with a square base measuring 160 meters on each side and a height of about 8 meters. To access it, walkers must navigate the staircase on its western side and arrive at a central plaza surrounded by around 20 monuments serving various purposes.

» Temple of the Five Stories

This is the crown jewel of Edzná. Standing at 31.5 meters tall, the temple features five levels adorned with up to 27 vaulted chambers. Visitors can observe remnants of decorative crests that once graced the upper temple, along with various hieroglyphics at its base.

» House of the Moon

Located at the southwestern corner of the Great Acropolis, the upper section of the House of the Moon offers the best panoramic views of the entire site, making it a must-visit.

Tips for Visiting Edzná

The site is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM every day.
Parking is free, and visitors have reported no issues with theft, as there are usually personnel monitoring the area.
After the entrance booth, you will find restrooms and a small vendor machine, which may not always work. Bring your own water as shaded areas are limited.
For the best views, ascend to the top of the House of the Moon, where you can see the entire layout of the Great Acropolis, including the Temple of the Five Stories.
