Though it may seem a world away from the Colombian mainland, the charm of San Andrés is undeniable. Captivating history of San Andrés

San Andrés and its nearby sister island, Providencia, have a rich history that dates back centuries. These Caribbean islands remained largely uninhabited until the arrival of Christopher Columbus and the Spanish in 1502. However, it wasn't until over a century later that European settlers from England and Holland began to settle here.

During this period, the infamous Pirate Morgan used the islands as a hideout for his stolen treasures. The islands then fell under Spanish control until they gained independence, thanks in part to the French corsair, Luis Aury, who aligned with Simón Bolívar's forces. By the early 1820s, San Andrés and Providencia became part of Colombia, ultimately establishing their unique identity as the only island department in the country.

Today, the islands are home to the Raizal community, descendants of African slaves who were brought to the Americas during the colonial era. This community has preserved a distinct culture, complete with its own language, the Sanandresano Creole, a fascinating mix of English, African languages, and Spanish. Situated approximately 800 km from Colombia's northern coast, San Andrés is easily accessible via flights from major cities like Medellín, Cartagena, and Bogotá. Airlines such as Latam, Avianca, and Viva Colombia frequently offer direct flights, with prices hovering around €50. We flew from Medellín with Viva Colombia for just €43, utilizing the Skyscanner app to find the best deals.

Upon arrival at the airport, transportation options to your accommodation include taxis and walking, depending on your location. We chose to walk to our hotel in the town center, which was a pleasant experience.

If you're planning to visit nearby Providencia, flights from San Andrés are your best bet. While ferry services are available, travelers prone to seasickness may find this option uncomfortable.

Entry fee for San Andrés

To visit San Andrés and Providencia, you will need to pay an entry fee of 117,000 COP (approximately €30), a tax intended for tourism development on the islands. We paid this fee at the airline counter during check-in, and it’s worth noting that payment is only accepted in cash.

Getting around San Andrés

San Andrés features a 15 km coastal road encircling the island, along with several inner roads leading to local communities such as La Loma. Here are some options for getting around:

• Biking: Rent electric bikes for around 30,000 COP per day.
• Motorbike rental: A popular choice for exploring the island, rentals start at 60,000 COP, with some companies offering delivery to your accommodation.
• Golf carts and buggies: Ideal for families or groups, rentals begin at 120,000 COP.
• Tourist bus: A convenient option for accessing major attractions, with a fare of 35,000 COP.
• Local buses: An affordable way to travel around, costing just 2,800 COP per ticket.
• Taxis: While available, taxis are generally the most expensive mode of transportation.

Accommodation options are plentiful across the island, but staying in the town center is advisable. This area offers a variety of affordable options, restaurants, shops, and easy access to Spratt Bight beach, where boat tours typically depart.

Casa Museo Isleña

A charming house dating back to the 1800s, offering guided tours that delve into local history, followed by traditional dance performances. Admission costs 10,000 COP.

Cueva de Morgan

This cave was once used by the notorious pirate Henry Morgan to hide his treasures. Nowadays, it has been transformed into a theme park, complete with shows and exhibitions, though many visitors feel the entrance fee of 15,000 COP is steep.

West View and La Piscinita

These serene spots offer crystal-clear waters perfect for snorkeling. Access requires a small entrance fee, typically around 5,000 COP.

This area is set up for snorkeling, with bars and music creating a lively atmosphere. Entrance fees are typically around 5,000 COP.

Take at least a day to explore nearby attractions. Numerous agencies offer excursions, making it easy to book your adventure. Some popular destinations include:

Johnny Cay

This picturesque island features palm trees and white sandy beaches. While it can be busy, the natural beauty makes it worth a visit. Entry is 8,000 COP, and you can enjoy local restaurants offering delicious seafood.

The Aquarium

A smaller islet known for its colorful fish, perfect for snorkeling. Be prepared to rent snorkeling gear for 10,000 COP. The atmosphere can become crowded, especially with tourists seeking photos with manta rays.

Mangroves

Located in Old Point, this area is rich in mangroves and offers a unique perspective on the island’s natural beauty.

Swimming with Manta Rays

While some tours offer the chance to interact with these majestic creatures, we advise against it to ensure their well-being.

Typically, excursions include transportation, and prices vary. For example, we paid around 30,000 COP for a tour to Johnny Cay and The Aquarium. You can book tours online for convenience.

Dining options in San Andrés

San Andrés has a vibrant food scene with diverse options catering to all budgets. Here are some recommendations:

• Donde Francesca: A beachfront restaurant with delightful seafood dishes, though it can be pricier.
• La Fondita: Affordable daily specials starting at 15,000 COP.
• La Calle del Rojo: A lively local eatery with hearty meals for around 15,000-18,000 COP.
• Comidas Rápidas Mora: A popular spot for quick bites, including skewers and arepas for just 8,000 COP.
• Restaurante Sol y Sombra: Offering complete meals at 11,000 COP, known for their generous portions.
• Homemade food stalls: Throughout the promenade, you'll find locals selling freshly cooked meals at reasonable prices.

Essential travel tips for San Andrés

The main beach features a tourist information center, which can provide maps and basic guidance. However, it may not be particularly helpful for tour inquiries.

San Andrés offers various services for travelers, including ATMs, supermarkets, and Wi-Fi (though it can be slow). For basic necessities, Super Todo and Super Éxito are the most affordable supermarkets.

As a duty-free island, many products are tax-exempt, making it an excellent place to shop for alcohol, tobacco, and other goods.
