Top 10 things to see and do in Varadero

Are you searching for the best things to see and do in Varadero? This paradise on Earth boasts one of the most stunning beaches in Cuba, and we're here to share our top ten recommendations for your visit. But first, let us share our own experience...
Initially, we almost decided against visiting Varadero. Why? The reputation of this destination, known for its all-inclusive resorts, didn’t excite us much. However, we took the plunge and decided to give it a chance, and we’re so glad we did.
Surprisingly, Varadero was much more enjoyable than we anticipated. While we thought it would resemble a “Cuban Benidorm” (and in some ways, it does), we discovered beautiful beaches, excellent restaurants, and friendly locals. Among them was Alain, our host, who we now affectionately refer to as our Cuban brother.
So whether you're planning to indulge in a luxurious resort or stay in a modest accommodation in nearby Santa Marta, visiting Varadero is a must on your Cuba itinerary. To help you navigate your trip, check out our guide on budget travel to Varadero.

1. Enjoy the beaches: the ultimate experience in Varadero
The real treasure of Varadero lies in its beaches, where fine white sand meets indescribably turquoise waters. We fell in love with them instantly. Therefore, the first thing we recommend doing in Varadero is to relax on one of its many beaches.
Keep in mind that while many beaches are private, accessible only to resort guests, there are numerous public beaches as well. Our favorite was Playa de la Calle 64, nestled between two resorts, offering tranquility and stunning waters. If you chat with the bar staff, they might rent you a sunbed and an umbrella for around 5€ for two sunbeds and an umbrella per day.
2. Take a boat tour
At the beach, you'll find tour operators ready to offer exciting boat excursions and water activities, such as sailing on catamarans, or trying out the classic pedal boats. However, we advise against snorkeling at Playa Coral. Although it’s often touted as a must-do, we found the reef to be underwhelming and the beach rather average. Worse still, they often feed the fish to attract them!
3. Discover the Cueva de Saturno
A visit to Cueva de Saturno is a must for a refreshing swim. This freshwater cave, reminiscent of a cenote, is located in Cárdenas, a historic city just half an hour from Varadero, known for its rum production. You can visit it independently for an entrance fee of around 5€ per person.
4. Excursion to Cayo Blanco
Additionally, there are fantastic excursions to nearby cays, which appear like a tongue of land parallel to Varadero’s coast on a map. The Cayo Blanco excursion is particularly popular and usually includes a catamaran ride, snorkeling equipment, meals, and an open bar! You can reserve it online here, but remember, these excursions are usually cheaper when booked on-site.
Important note: Avoid the dolphinarium and any activities that exploit animals. If you want to see fish, grab a snorkeling mask and dive right in!
5. Experience the nightlife in Varadero
Nightlife in Varadero is renowned for being one of the best in Cuba, and there’s no shortage of options. A few recommendations include:
- Calle 62: Known for its legendary parties, vibrant atmosphere, and live shows.
- La Comparsita: A famous nightclub where entry costs 10€ and includes an open bar.
- The Beatles: A laid-back bar where you can enjoy a drink accompanied by live music.
6. Stay at an all-inclusive resort for at least one night
We spent six nights in a guest house in Santa Marta, just before entering the Varadero Peninsula, which we found to be the best option for saving money. However, if you have the chance, book at least one or two nights in an all-inclusive resort to experience both sides of this destination. Here are three recommendations:
- Barcelo Arenas Blancas
- Be Live Experience Tuxpan
- Starfish Varadero
7. Visit Santa Marta for a taste of local life
Even if you’re not staying in Santa Marta, it’s worth exploring the town to experience the “more authentic Varadero.” You can also treat yourself to dinner at Terraza Cuba, our favorite restaurant in Varadero, where we indulged in delicious seafood, including lobster, at great prices.
8. Explore the Vareahicacos Ecological Reserve
Take a half-day trip to the Vareahicacos Ecological Reserve, a protected area located just outside the city on the eastern side of the Hicacos Peninsula. Here, you can visit two caves (each with an entrance fee of about 5€): the Cueva de Ambrosio, known for its ancient rock paintings, and the less impressive Cueva de los Musulmanes. If you want to save some cash, you might skip the latter.
9. Visit the Casa del Ron de Varadero
Rum is one of Cuba's symbols, and your trip is a perfect excuse to indulge without any side-eye. At the Casa del Ron de Varadero, you can learn about the rum production process and, of course, sample various types during a tasting session. Don't forget to pick up a few bottles as souvenirs!
10. Day trip to Havana from Varadero
Don’t make the mistake of spending your entire vacation in Varadero (trust me, some people do!). Take advantage of your strategic location in Cuba to embark on a day trip. A visit to the capital, Havana, is essential! You can join a day tour like this, but we recommend spending at least two days to fully explore the city. These are our top recommendations for things to see and do in Varadero. It turned out to be a delightful stop on our journey, and honestly, we would return without hesitation (especially to relax, soak up the sun, sip mojitos, and enjoy the crystal-clear waters). Just remember not to get too comfortable, as Cuba is an incredible island with many more places to explore.
