Top 10 things to see and do in the Balkans

When you think of Europe, the first destinations that come to mind are often the iconic cities with majestic architecture and rich histories. However, there lies a lesser-known gem that offers a unique blend of culture, natural beauty, and complex history: the Balkans. This region is often referred to as “the other Europe,” and once you explore it, you’ll understand why. Get ready to dive into our top 10 things to see and do in the Balkans that will leave you enchanted and craving more.
Our two-month journey through the Balkans took us to stunning countries like Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro, Albania, Macedonia, and Bulgaria. Each of these places has left an indelible mark on our hearts, and we hope to inspire others to discover this remarkably diverse region.
The Balkans are often regarded as a hidden treasure, offering a powerful mix of history, scars, beauty, and authenticity. The region boasts a captivating personality characterized by its slightly faded charm, narrow streets filled with untold stories, tranquil squares, and timeworn buildings. Most importantly, the resilience and warmth of the people who have endured so much yet continue to smile is truly inspiring. The spirit of the Balkans captivated us from the very first moment.
Traveling through the Balkans is not merely about witnessing beautiful sights—though there are plenty of those. It's about facing a complicated history, understanding nuances, and experiencing emotions that take you by surprise. It's a journey that quietly transforms you, leaving a lasting imprint long after you've returned home.

1. Discover the vibrant chaos of Albania
At first glance, you might think, “This isn’t a specific place,” and while that’s true, **Albania deserves a spot in our top 10**, not just for its destinations but for its essence. Albania is not merely a destination; it’s an experience. It’s a beautiful chaos, a land of unexpected beaches, unguarded ruins, castles perched on mountains, and villages where time seems to stand still. The hospitality of the locals, the wild roads, and incredibly affordable prices create a sense of adventure that feels like a hidden gem waiting to be uncovered.
Where else can you spot a man boarding a bus with a hot corn cob in his pocket, or see countless abandoned bunkers lining the roads, or witness horse-drawn carts as the primary mode of transport for many families? The traffic madness of the capital city, Tirana, is a spectacle in itself: indulge in pastries for just 1€ and then climb a concrete pyramid in the city center, admire the iconic Berat with its thousand windows, or explore the breathtaking Albanian Riviera.
2. Marvel at the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia
Standing before the majestic Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia is a breathtaking experience. The exterior is stunning, but stepping inside feels like entering a magical realm. The interior is a silent sanctuary filled with golden icons, ancient frescoes, and enormous chandeliers, all enveloped in the sweet aroma of incense and melted wax as you cross the threshold.
The dim light filtering through the stained glass creates a mystical atmosphere that sends shivers down your spine, even if you’re not particularly spiritual.
3. Explore the Palace of Diocletian in Split
Ah, Croatia, how you amaze us! The Palace of Diocletian is located in Split, but don’t expect a typical palace; it takes up an entire historical core. This small citadel is surrounded by walls, and within them lie the city’s major attractions—from the Peristyle to the basements, not to mention the beautiful squares and narrow alleyways that feel suspended in time. The Palace of Diocletian is so stunning that many scenes from Game of Thrones were filmed here (though, sadly, no dragons).
4. Savor the flavors of Balkan cuisine
Upon returning home, we stepped on the scales, shedding a few tears, but we’d do it all over again for the food. The Balkans are known not only for their history and stunning landscapes but also for their hearty and delicious home-cooked cuisine that ranks among our favorites without question.
From soups that warm the soul to melt-in-your-mouth meats and desserts that would make your grandmother weep with joy, it’s hard not to fall in love with this aspect of the journey. Here are our top three culinary must-tries in the Balkans:
- Cevapi: Spiced minced meat shaped into sausages (don’t call them sausages if you don’t want to be scolded!). Sarajevo is undoubtedly the best place to enjoy them!
- Burek: Savory pastries filled with various ingredients (meat, spinach and cheese, potatoes…)
- Baklava: An Ottoman-origin pastry that is rich in calories and happiness (every bite sends your endorphins skyrocketing).

5. Visit Ohrid, the jewel of Macedonia
Perhaps it’s the crystal-clear waters of the lake that seem straight out of a postcard or the fortress that crowns the hill, offering breathtaking views. It could be the charming Byzantine churches nestled between cobblestone streets or the sun-warmed cats lounging at every corner. Maybe it’s the teahouses where time stands still as you savor Turkish tea alongside a delightful piece of baklava. Whatever the reason, Ohrid has something special.
This is one of those places that words can’t quite capture but that captures you as soon as you arrive—a corner brimming with history, tranquility, and authenticity that makes Northern Macedonia a must-stop on any Balkan journey.
6. Experience the magic of Lake Bled in Slovenia
One of the most iconic spots in Slovenia, Lake Bled is a place that etches itself in your memory. It has it all: emerald waters, a fairytale island with its church at the center, a castle perched on a hill with stunning views, and a picturesque path around the lake that feels like a retreat from the world.
You can hop on a traditional pletna boat to row to the island, ring the bell of wishes, climb to Bled Castle for the most epic panorama, or simply stroll leisurely along the shore. If you treat yourself along the way, even better: try the famous Bled cake, a creamy delight that should be declared a national treasure.
7. Discover the allure of Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik may have its flaws—predominantly, us tourists. Yes, the crowds can be overwhelming. Yet, there’s no denying that this stunning walled city deserves a spot in the top 10 of any Balkan itinerary.
Dubrovnik is breathtakingly beautiful. Its impressive walls, charming cobblestone streets in the old town, seaside viewpoints, hidden coves, and the air of nobility that permeates each corner create an irresistible allure. If you’re into history or a fan of Game of Thrones, prepare to enjoy this stone-and-tile theme park.
8. Relive history in Mostar
Mostar is a city with a tragic history, yet today it stands as one of the most visited places in the region. Why? Its bridge serves as a symbol of a senseless war. Exploring the historic center, climbing the minaret of the Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque, crossing the famous bridge, and strolling with local dogs has been an unforgettable experience. Mostar radiates soul, and you can feel it at every turn.
If time permits, you can visit the nearby village of Blagaj, famous for its beautiful dervish monastery, and Pocitelj.
9. Experience the spirit of Sarajevo
We knew even before visiting that the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina would steal a piece of our hearts—and it did.
Sarajevo touches you on a deep level. It is living history, a blend of cultures, a testament to struggle, and a beacon of hope. Sarajevo has endured unimaginable hardships, yet it has risen with a dignity that moves you.
Today, this is a multicultural city that is sensitive, resilient, and profoundly human. You can walk through streets where churches, mosques, and synagogues coexist, sip Bosnian coffee while listening to the call to prayer, or follow the traces of conflict in its museums, walls, and the stories of its people.
Sarajevo is not just a stop on your journey; it’s an experience that, if you open your heart, will also take a piece of yours.
10. Kotor, the jewel of Montenegro
Kotor is our little paradise. The Boka Bay is a true marvel—stunning nature, fairytale villages, a tranquil sea like a mirror, and sunsets that seem painted. We loved it so much that we fantasized about moving there to a house with sea views… who knows, maybe one day.
The center of Kotor resembles a mini Dubrovnik (tourists included), and if you’re up for the challenge of climbing a few steps, make your way to the San Juan Fortress for the best views. Don’t miss visiting the nearby village of Perast, home to the famous church of Our Lady of the Rocks.
There are countless other remarkable places that didn’t make this list, such as Ljubljana, Belgrade, the stunning Plitvice Lakes, or the enchanting region of Istria in Croatia. Clearly, visiting this region is worthwhile, and as you can see, there are numerous things to see and do in the Balkans.
As someone once asked us, we’ll share which countries we find to be the most beautiful in the Balkans: Croatia, Bosnia, and Montenegro. So, if you’re considering a unique travel destination, this area will not disappoint.
Do you know of other sites, places, or experiences to see and do in the Balkans? We would return time and again, and in fact, we plan to revisit this “other Europe” that has captivated us so much.
