1. Playa de Rodas: Paradise Awaits
The Playa de Rodas has been the talk of the town ever since it was named the best beach in the world by The Guardian in 2007. For the locals, however, this recognition merely confirmed what they already knew: they had a little slice of paradise just 45 minutes by ferry from Vigo.
Yes, you read that right! The Playa de Rodas is located on the Cíes Islands, a must-visit destination in Galicia. While the waters can be as chilly as a penguin’s backside, don’t let that deter you. The experience of splashing in these pristine waters is worth every shiver.
To help you plan your visit, check out our guide for visiting the Cíes Islands.
2. Playa de la Lanzada: A Family Favorite
We chose to set up base here for several days to explore the stunning Rías Baixas, and it was a fantastic decision! With the beautiful Playa de la Lanzada just a stone's throw from our accommodation, leaving it each day was a challenge. This beach has been a family vacation spot for years, making our visit all the more special.
Stretching 2.5 km in length, with fine sand and crystal-clear waters, it's undoubtedly one of the best beaches in Galicia. The waves can be quite strong, making it perfect for those eager to ride the surf and indulge in water sports. Situated near O Grove and Sanxenxo, both excellent spots for dining and leisurely strolls after a day at the beach, don't miss the stunning sunsets from the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de La Lanzada.
3. Playa Xilloi: Nature's Gem
Located in the province of Lugo, within the enchanting Rías Altas, Playa Xilloi captivates with its emerald waters and stunning natural surroundings. Nestled between the region’s characteristic cliffs, this beach resembles a tropical oasis.
If you’re fortunate enough to catch a day with calm waters, you might just feel as if you've been transported to the Caribbean. However, as soon as you dip your toes in, you’ll remember you’re in the Cantabrian Sea! The nearby Cabo de Estaca de Bares, where the Atlantic meets the Cantabrian, adds to the coastal drama. Even on windy days, the beach showcases the wild beauty of Galicia.
We stumbled across this beach almost by chance and instantly recognized it as one of Galicia's hidden gems. We recommend visiting the Capilla de Santa Comba (there’s parking nearby) and allowing yourself to be swept away by the rhythm of the Atlantic waves lapping against this 1,500-meter stretch of sand.
The most picturesque area is close to the wooden stairs, reminiscent of New Zealand and Australia. It’s a stunning reminder of how amazing Galicia truly is!
5. Playa de Carnota: The Longest Beach
Playa de Carnota boasts the title of the longest beach in Galicia, stretching over 7 km. Even in peak summer, you’ll find plenty of space to enjoy it without feeling crowded. Its crescent shape and white sand are protected by a dune system, lending it a wild and untamed beauty.
Located about 70 km from Santiago de Compostela, in the heart of the Costa da Morte, this stretch of coastline is one of the most breathtaking in Galicia. And here, you can find a vast beach to relax and unwind!
6. Playa de Castiñeiras: Family-Friendly Fun
Playa de Castiñeiras is a small beach featuring fine sand and transparent waters. Nestled within a sheltered bay, it usually has calm waters, making it perfect for families with children. Just a couple of things to note: parking is paid (you’ll have to leave your car in private fields), and it's best to visit in the morning since it’s on the east side of the bay, which means it gets less sun in the afternoon.
Located in the Ría de Aldán, at the northern tip of the Península del Morrazo, this area is dotted with many other beautiful beaches and coves. If you don’t find luck at Playa de Castiñeiras, consider checking out Playa de Areacova, Cala de Pipín, Playa de Bon, or Playa de Lagoelas.
7. Playa de Barra: A Nudist Haven
On the other side of the Península del Morrazo, close to the stunning Cabo Home Lighthouse (which is particularly breathtaking at sunset), lies this nudist beach, sheltered by a pine forest in a beautiful natural setting. Both its tranquil waters and atmosphere make it a unique destination. If you prefer a textile beach, head over to nearby Playa de Nerga.
For those seeking a wild and unspoiled beach experience, lace up your shoes and hike the Cabo Home trail to reach the Playa Milide. If you decide to go, let us know how it went!
8. Playa de Piedras Negras: A Beautiful Surprise
Nestled in the O Grove Peninsula, in the municipality of San Vicente do Mar, Playa de Piedras Negras offers a delightful surprise for visitors. This beach is actually a collection of small coves interconnected by a charming wooden walkway ideal for strolling. Although the waters are cold, they are calm and transparent, allowing you to take a refreshing dip in one of the most beautiful settings along the Galician coast.
The beach gets its name from the unique stones scattered throughout the area. You can park your car at the harbor and enjoy a pleasant walk along the boardwalk to discover your favorite spot. If you're up for more adventure, continue past the chiringuito El Pirata to explore less crowded beaches.
9. Playa de Patos: Surfing Paradise
If you're on the hunt for a beach to catch some waves, Playa de Patos is our top pick. With consistent surf, it’s a favored spot for many surf schools offering lessons. Want to learn how to ride the waves? This is your place! Another well-known surfing beach is Playa de Pantín, located near Cedeira.
The beach also has a vibrant social scene with plenty of lively bars and eateries. After a long day riding the waves, there’s nothing quite like enjoying a cold Estrella Galicia, right?
10. Isla de Arosa + Islote de Areoso: An Adventurer’s Delight
This destination is perfect for adventure seekers who can’t sit still on a towel for hours. On the Illa de Arousa, designated a Natural Reserve, you’ll find several small beaches that usually offer warm and calm waters. You won’t need a boat to reach the island; it’s connected to the mainland via a 2 km bridge.
However, you will want to jump into the water for another adventure: how about renting a kayak and paddling to the nearby islote de Guidoiro Areoso? This small island features stretches of white sand and crystal-clear waters just 1.5 km from the coast. If you prefer a guided experience, there are tours available to take you along.
Extra: Playa de las Catedrales: Nature's Masterpiece
No list of Galicia's best beaches would be complete without mentioning Playa de las Catedrales. Beyond its stunning sands and surf, this beach is a genuine natural work of art. It features towering rock arches that reach up to 30 meters high, giving it its name—walking beneath them feels like stepping into a stone cathedral, accompanied by the melodic sounds of the waves.
During summer and Holy Week, it’s necessary to request a permit (free of charge) to visit, as it is very popular. Be sure to check the tide schedule; visiting during high tide means you won’t get to enjoy it fully.
Extra: Playa de los Cristales: A Unique Experience
A visit to this beach is well worth your time, as it features sand composed of colorful glass crystals. Over time, the sea's erosion has transformed these shards into smooth pebbles. While it’s not a beach for sunbathing or swimming, it serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of human waste on our oceans—a poignant lesson for all visitors.
Map of the Best Beaches in Galicia
Here’s a map showcasing the locations of the best beaches in Galicia that we’ve recommended:
Of course, this list doesn’t encompass other stunning beaches like the Castro de Baroña, Playa de Os Castros, Playa de Canelas, Playa de Vilar in the Corrubedo Dunes Natural Park, Playa de Langosteira just before reaching Finisterre, or Playa del Vao and Playa de Samil near Vigo. However, the beaches we've highlighted are our personal favorites, and we look forward to returning to expand this list further!
