Are you dreaming of an unforgettable adventure in Australia? If so, you're not alone! Many travelers are captivated by this beautiful continent, with its breathtaking landscapes and vibrant cities. Join us as we share our meticulously planned itinerary for a three-month journey through Australia, filled with excitement, discovery, and plenty of fun!

Exploring the road trip from Perth to Melbourne

Our journey begins with an unexpected twist. While planning our travels, we stumbled upon an incredible deal to fly to Perth from Bali. Naturally, we couldn't resist the allure of visiting the largest city in Western Australia. Faced with two options—spending a few days in Perth and then flying to Melbourne or embarking on an epic road trip—we chose the latter. Who wouldn't want to drive thousands of kilometers, soaking in the stunning coastline, encountering kangaroos, and marveling at epic landscapes?

We plan to spend about four days exploring Perth, Fremantle, and the stunning Rottnest Island, home to the adorable quokkas. After that, we will kick off our three-week road trip to Melbourne, experiencing the best of what this route has to offer.

Discovering Melbourne, housesitting, and Tasmania

In Melbourne, we will spend a delightful week immersing ourselves in the city's culture, which consistently ranks as one of the best places to live in the world. We'll soon see if it lives up to the hype compared to our usual haunts!

Continuing with our tradition of housesitting, which we adored during our time in New Zealand, we've found a lovely home in Australia that needs some care. We will be taking care of a dog and a cat for three weeks in a charming village on the Mornington Peninsula, located about 80 km from Melbourne. It’s a perfect way to experience local life while also allowing us to catch up on our blog!

As we wrap up our time in Melbourne, we’ll head to Tasmania, often referred to as Australia's "New Zealand." With its stunning landscapes and unique wildlife, we can’t wait to explore this beautiful island. And, of course, we are hoping to avoid any encounters with the infamous Tasmanian devils!

Venturing on a road trip from Melbourne to Cairns

The next leg of our journey is the least planned out, but we’re excited to tackle the iconic East Coast. Our itinerary includes stops at breathtaking locations such as the Blue Mountains, Byron Bay, and Magnetic Island, culminating in the magnificent Great Barrier Reef near Cairns. We anticipate this segment will take us around another three weeks, with a final five-day stay in Sydney to round off our Australian adventure.

To give you an idea of the scale, we'll be driving a whopping 10,000 km throughout this trip. You might wonder why anyone would undertake such a journey. The answer lies in our memories; some of our best travel experiences have been during epic road trips. It’s not just about reaching the destination but savoring every moment along the way—the sights, sounds, and stories that unfold as we move from one place to another.

Is three months enough time to explore Australia?

Our adventure will span about three months, and while we know this is a luxury not everyone can afford, we want to assure you that this time will be well spent. After our travels, we’ll share must-see stops and offer suggestions for shorter trips ranging from three to four weeks for those who can’t take as much time off.

Budgeting for three months in Australia

While planning our trip, we’ve also been considering the costs involved. Australia can be known for being expensive, so it's essential to budget wisely. Here’s a rough breakdown of what to expect:

  • Accommodation: Depending on your travel style, prices can range from hostels to hotels.
  • Food: Dining out can add up quickly, so consider cooking some meals yourself.
  • Transportation: Renting a car or campervan can be a fun and flexible way to travel.
  • Activities: Tours and excursions can vary widely in price, so plan accordingly.
  • Insurance: A travel insurance policy is crucial for peace of mind.

We’re excited to dive into experiences that fit our budget and allow us to explore the beauty of this continent without breaking the bank.

What is the best time to visit Australia?

When planning a trip, timing is key. The best months to visit Australia typically fall between September and November and March to May. During these periods, the weather is pleasant, and you can avoid the peak tourist crowds. The summer months (December to February) can be sweltering, especially in the northern regions, while winter (June to August) brings cooler temperatures in the south.
