Things to see in Berat, the city of a thousand windows in Albania

Are you planning a trip to Berat soon? This article will guide you through our experience in this charming city of Albania, sharing recommendations on the best places to visit in Berat and must-do activities that make this hidden gem truly special.
If eyes are the windows to the soul, then Berat is the soul of Albania. Everywhere you go in Berat, you'll feel as if the city is watching you while you take in its beauty. Unlike other destinations where tourists are the observers, in Berat, it seems that the city is observing you with its myriad of windows, as if asking, "Which of my streets will you choose? Where will you take a photo? How far are you willing to climb?"
But don't worry; this gaze is not critical. Instead, it’s a curious and playful glance, delighted to see tourists marveling at its charm. As we wander through its streets, we uncover the layers of its identity, and Berat warmly welcomes us, revealing more of its essence with each step. Berat feels like a woman, confident and inviting, secure in her allure.
The Three Faces of Berat
While it's clear that Berat has a thousand eyes, what you may not know is that it has three distinct faces: Gorica, Mangalem, and Kalaja.
Gorica: This is the least touristy neighborhood, making it the most authentic. Gorica represents the Christian soul of Berat, separated from its two "sisters" by the Osum River. Strolling through its streets offers a glimpse into everyday life, accompanied by stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
Mangalem: A captivating neighborhood filled with the famous 'houses of a thousand windows,' mosques, and an ambiance that feels like stepping back in time. Don't miss the chance to visit the Sultan Mosque, the oldest in Albania, which stands as a testament to the city’s rich cultural tapestry.
Kalaja: Here, the castle reigns supreme, observing everything that unfolds below. Be prepared to climb steep streets (and I mean steep!), but the panoramic views from the top are worth every step. While the castle is the star of the show, the charming houses and numerous churches in the vicinity serve as perfect supporting characters, enriching the experience.
Berat’s modern side is also worth exploring, featuring a long avenue lined with cafes and terraces, as well as a picturesque central square. This is an ideal spot to find a local restaurant and sample some regional specialties.
The following morning, after enjoying breakfast with breathtaking views, we boarded a bus heading to our next destination: Macedonia. But that’s a story for another time.
