Things to See and Do in Viñales, Cuba's Rural Gem

Discover the hidden gems of Viñales, a quaint village located in the western part of Cuba, renowned for its lush tobacco plantations and stunning natural landscapes. If you're seeking a break from the bustling tourist hotspots like Varadero, Viñales offers an authentic experience of Cuba's rural life, where the pace is slow and the air is filled with the sounds of nature. From horse-drawn carriages to vibrant sunsets over the mogotes, this destination is a paradise for adventurers and nature lovers alike.
But it’s essential to understand that while the village retains its rustic charm, the effects of mass tourism are evident. A short stroll through the main square reveals that Viñales is also a popular spot among tourists. However, venture beyond the main thoroughfare, and you'll find the tranquil beauty of the valley, where local farmers work the land and the essence of rural Cuba thrives.
Is a visit to Viñales worth it?
Absolutely! Viñales has much to offer visitors, from breathtaking landscapes to a rich cultural experience. Spending time in this village can lead to memorable encounters and adventures, provided you avoid the common tourist pitfalls. During our four-night stay, we experienced some challenges, particularly with stomach issues that affected the majority of our group. Yet, even amidst these difficulties, we were able to enjoy the beauty of the valley and create lasting memories.
While our time was occasionally spent relaxing and enjoying the hospitality of our hosts, we made the most of our visit by exploring the stunning surroundings of Viñales Valley. Here are some of the highlights of what you can see and do in this enchanting destination:
1. Explore the breathtaking Viñales Valley
We decided to hire a taxi for a half-day tour (approximately 3 hours) to visit the main attractions within Viñales Valley:
Cueva del Indio
This impressive cave system is one of the most popular and accessible in the region. Featuring a subterranean river, visitors can explore the cave both on foot and via a boat ride. With a 1 km stretch open to the public, the sights inside are awe-inspiring, and the entrance fee is just 5 CUC.
Palenque de los Cimarrones
This is another cave site that has been developed for tourism but we chose to admire it from the outside. The surrounding scenery is beautiful, making it worthwhile to stop and take a few photos.
Caverna de Santo Tomás
Located about 20 km from Viñales, this is one of Cuba's largest cave systems, stretching across 45 km of tunnels. Recognized as a National Monument, it's an incredible site for those interested in geology and adventure. If you're keen to visit multiple caves, consider booking a tour that includes all three locations.
Mural de la Prehistoria
This massive mural painted on the side of a mogote illustrates the evolution of life on Earth. Vibrant colors and various figures make it a quirky attraction and, at 3 CUC for entry, it's worth a visit. However, it can be appreciated well enough from outside.
Mirador del Hotel Los Jazmines
While it may not be the most famous viewpoint, the vistas from this hotel are undeniably lovely and free to enjoy.
Casa del Veguero
This tobacco plantation is one of the most famous in the area. Depending on the season, you might see different crops; in winter, tobacco is prevalent. The highlight is watching the drying process of tobacco leaves and witnessing how cigars are rolled, with the option to purchase a pack of ten for 10 CUC.
Our taxi tour, which took around 3 hours, cost 25 CUC. Prices are generally fixed, although negotiating is possible. Alternatively, a hop on hop off bus service is available for 5 CUC, though its limited frequency may not be the best option for everyone.
2. Enjoy trekking or cycling adventures
One of the most rewarding experiences in Viñales is to engage in trekking or cycling tours that take you deep into the heart of the valley. These excursions allow you to fully immerse yourself in the breathtaking landscapes and learn more about the local flora and fauna. Both guided and self-guided tours are available, with options ranging from leisurely rides to more challenging treks.
Here are some popular trekking options:
- Trekking through Viñales Valley
- Sunset hiking in the Valley of Silence
- Hiking in Palmarito Valley
- Sunrise trek in Sierra del Infierno
Horseback riding is also quite popular in Viñales, although we opted not to participate in that activity.
3. Discover the village of Viñales and its dining spots
While the village itself is small, it boasts a plethora of cafés and restaurants where you can savor traditional Cuban cuisine. We recommend sampling various establishments to get a true taste of local flavors. In the evenings, live music often fills the air, and the mojitos flow freely!
During the day, take some time to wander through the village and its charming surroundings. Early morning is ideal for those looking to embark on a longer walking adventure, while the late afternoon offers stunning views as the sun sets over the landscape.
4. Take a trip to Cayo Jutias
One of the two popular beach excursions from Viñales, Cayo Jutias is the more accessible option for a day trip. Transportation costs 15 CUC per person for a round trip and can be arranged through local agencies in the main square or online for a slightly higher price at this website.
5. Visit Cayo Levisa
Cayo Levisa is less accessible since it's only reachable by ferry. Packages for transport, including bus and ferry, range from 39 CUC (for a sandwich) to 47 CUC (for a buffet meal). We attempted to negotiate the prices but found it challenging. You might also consider a private tour that includes transport and resort access.
Alternatively, you can reach the ferry terminal by taxi, though be prepared for the ferry cost of approximately 23 CUC each way (this detail remains unverified).
These excursions are undoubtedly two of the best experiences Viñales has to offer.

:: Where to stay in Viñales?
We stayed at Casa Los Rodriguez, which we booked through Airbnb. While reservations aren't strictly necessary, most homes in the village are set up as tourist accommodations. If you prefer to arrange your stay upon arrival, take some time to compare prices before making a decision.
:: How to get to Viñales from Havana?
We hired a new yellow taxi for 70 CUC for four people. Alternatively, taking the Viazul bus costs about 12 USD per person and takes approximately 4-5 hours, with departures at 09:00 and 14:30. After researching various options, we found the best price from a local named Luis: +53 78709895 / +53 53342333.
