Discovering Buriram: An Introduction

Our journey through Thailand began back in 2010, and since then, we have returned time and again, captivated by its charm. Yet, Buriram remained unexplored until recently. With a friend visiting, we seized the opportunity to venture into eastern Thailand, a region promising some of the country’s most breathtaking Khmer temples.

So, what makes Buriram special? Beyond its famous temples, the city has gained recognition for being home to the celebrated Buriram United football club, a powerhouse in Thai football. The influence of the club owner has transformed the area, introducing modern amenities like a world-class stadium, a race circuit, and even a unique park featuring a massive lingam and depictions of the Kamasutra!

But our primary focus in Buriram was to explore the historical treasures that rival those found in Sukhothai and Ayutthaya. Let’s delve into the main attractions!

Exploring Phanom Rung: A Temple of the Gods

Phanom Rung is perhaps the most significant Khmer monument in Thailand, built over a thousand years ago atop an extinct volcano. Originally a Hindu temple, it later transformed into a Buddhist sanctuary.

To reach the temple, visitors traverse a stone pathway and cross a bridge symbolizing the journey from earth to heaven. The ascent culminates at the main sanctuary, a pagoda that represents Mount Kailash in the Himalayas, dedicated to the god Shiva.

Don’t miss the intricate relief on one of the door lintels depicting Vishnu reclining on a naga, a fascinating artifact with a story that spans continents!

  • Entrance Fee: 100 baht, or 150 baht for a combined ticket with Prasat Muang Tam

Visiting around April offers a unique experience as the temple aligns perfectly with the sun, allowing rays to illuminate all 15 doorways. It’s a natural spectacle worth planning for!

Visiting Prasat Muang Tam: The Urban Center

While Phanom Rung serves as a pilgrimage site, Prasat Muang Tam functions as the urban center of the region. Located just 5 km away, these stunning ruins stretch across the plains at the foot of the volcano.

Constructed between the 10th and 13th centuries, this site features several sanctuaries, passageways, and beautifully adorned ponds filled with lotus flowers. With fewer visitors, it offers a more intimate exploration of Khmer architecture.

  • Opening Hours: 06:00 AM to 06:00 PM
  • Entrance Fee: 100 baht, or 150 baht for a combined ticket with Phanom Rung

Discovering Phimai: A Mini Angkor Wat

Located 100 km from Buriram, Prasat Phimai (or Phimai History Park) is another essential stop for history enthusiasts. Often referred to as the mini Angkor Wat, this ancient site connects to a historic 225 km road that linked Angkor with Phimai.

The park features a stunning central tower (prang) symbolizing Mount Meru, surrounded by intricate carvings and inscriptions. This area is a testament to the architectural prowess of the Khmer Empire.

  • Opening Hours: 07:30 AM to 06:00 PM
  • Entrance Fee: 100 baht

Sai Ngam: Nature's Enigma

As part of the historical landscape, Sai Ngam, the largest banyan tree in the world, lies close to Phimai. This mesmerizing natural labyrinth features intertwined branches that create a mystical atmosphere.

According to local legend, spirits inhabit the tree, adding an air of mystery. While exploring, you might even find fortune tellers offering insights into your future!

Buriram Castle: The Modern Marvel

Our explorations in Buriram concluded with a visit to Buriram Castle. This contemporary complex houses the impressive Buriram United Stadium, a race circuit, shops, restaurants, and a temple reminiscent of the region's Khmer architecture.

While the area is famed for its historical significance, the modern amenities and the hospitality of the local people significantly enhance the experience. We even encountered friendly police officers who offered us a ride back to the city after a match!
