Things to See and Do in Ao Nang in Three Days

Ao Nang, an idyllic coastal town in Thailand, serves as the gateway to the stunning province of Krabi. With its breathtaking beaches and vibrant nightlife, it's no wonder that this destination draws countless travelers seeking both adventure and relaxation. If you're considering a visit, this comprehensive guide will provide you with everything you need to see and do in Ao Nang over the course of three days, along with essential tips for your journey.

During our trip through southern Thailand in 2012, we had the pleasure of visiting Railay and its spectacular landscapes. The towering rock formations and the vibrant climbing community left a lasting impression. We also stumbled upon a culinary gem—the massaman curry—which quickly became a favorite. This experience opened our eyes to the diverse and delectable Thai cuisine that awaits discovery beyond the usual fried rice and pad thai.

Now, returning to the Krabi coast with our friend Soufianito, we spent three enriching days in Ao Nang, the most tourist-friendly area along this beautiful coastline. From thrilling excursions to tranquil beach days, Ao Nang offers a little something for everyone.

Is Ao Nang worth visiting?

The question that often arises is whether Ao Nang is genuinely worth your time. While it may not offer an entirely authentic Thai experience, it serves as a fantastic base for exploring the surrounding area. With a plethora of affordable lodging options, diverse restaurants catering to various budgets, and a lively atmosphere both day and night, Ao Nang has plenty to offer.

Pros:

  • Accessibility to numerous excursions and activities.
  • Variety of dining options from street food to upscale restaurants.
  • Vibrant nightlife with bars and entertainment.
  • Beautiful, though crowded, beaches.

However, there are some downsides to consider:

  • Over-commercialization can hinder the authentic local experience.
  • Tourist crowds may lead to interactions with less friendly locals.
  • Some beaches are not as pristine as those found in less developed areas.

Despite these disadvantages, Ao Nang remains a pleasant and enjoyable place to stay, with friendly locals and plenty of activities to keep you engaged.

Exploring Railay Beach

One of the must-visit attractions near Ao Nang is the breathtaking Railay Beach, which is only accessible by boat. This stunning peninsula boasts a range of accommodations, though they tend to be pricier than those in Ao Nang.

How to get to Railay

Boats depart from Ao Nang Beach at two primary locations, heading towards Railay and stopping at Tonsai, Railay West, Ao Phranang, and Railay East. The cost for a one-way ticket is approximately 100 THB.

Activities in Railay

While visiting Railay, be sure to indulge in the following activities:

Beaches of Railay

Railay features four main beaches that are popular among visitors:

  • Tonsai: Known for its laid-back vibe and rock climbing opportunities.
  • Railay West: A long, picturesque beach with ample restaurants and amenities.
  • Ao Phranang: The most beautiful and luxurious beach, ideal for relaxation.
  • Railay East: Less scenic but offers affordable accommodations and great views.

Top Excursions from Ao Nang

No trip to Ao Nang would be complete without partaking in some of the fantastic excursions available. We opted for the Hong Island tour, which included several scenic stops. The price was around 500 THB per person, covering transportation and meals.

How to reach Ao Nang

Ao Nang Beach is conveniently located about 15 km from Krabi town and approximately 25 km from Krabi Airport. We arrived via a flight from Bangkok and pre-booked a taxi online with krabicab.com, which offered excellent service for around 550 THB.

For budget travelers, public transport is also available. Buses from the airport to Krabi cost about 150 THB per person, and you can catch a shared van to Ao Nang from Krabi for approximately 50 THB.
