Essential documents for extending your Thailand visa

To successfully extend your visa, make sure to gather the following documents:

  • Original passport - Ensure that your passport is valid and has sufficient blank pages.
  • Photocopies of the first page of your passport, the page with the entry stamp into Thailand, and the filled-out departure card. If you entered Thailand with a visa, include a photocopy of that page as well. All photocopies must be signed by you.
  • A photocopy of the TM30 notification, which is the registration that your accommodation submits to immigration. Request this from your hotel a few days before checking in. For more details, check here.
  • One passport-sized photo. If you don’t have one on hand, there are plenty of places nearby to take them for around 100 baht. The required size is 6x4 cm, but they are somewhat flexible with this requirement.
  • One completed application form, known as the TM.7, which you can pick up from the tables outside the immigration office. The form will require your personal information, entry dates, address in Thailand, and a Thai phone number. You can download the TM.7 form here.
  • Lastly, prepare to pay the 1,900 THB fee when you submit your documents.

If you need to make photocopies, there’s a convenient spot across the street from the airport office where you can get them done. Additionally, if you go to the Central Chiang Mai office, they offer this service for free.

IMPORTANT: For certain visa types, you may be able to extend online. This option requires registration and a specific process. While we haven't used this method, you can check it out on the official Chiang Mai immigration website.

Where to extend your visa in Chiang Mai

It's crucial to verify the current location of the immigration office before your visit, as these have changed frequently in recent years. The office used to be at Promenada Shopping Center, later moved to a building along the airport road approximately 4 km from the city center, which is still operational. Currently, there’s also an office at the Central Chiang Mai Shopping Center, located north of the bus terminal. This shifting can be quite confusing!

Step-by-step process for extending your Thailand visa

Here’s a concise guide to help you through the visa extension process in Chiang Mai:

  1. First, head to the currently operational immigration office.
  2. Grab the TM.7 form from the tables outside the office and fill it out (don’t forget to bring a pen!). If you have any uncertainties, leave those sections blank and ask for clarification when you submit it.
  3. Once you have your completed form, signed photocopies, and your photo ready, go inside the building and submit everything at the main counter along with your passport and the payment. You can pay 2,000 baht and receive change after the process is complete. You will be given a ticket with your turn number.
  4. Take a seat and wait for your number to be displayed on the screens. You will be called twice:
    • The first call is for your turn number, where they will take your photo. Once that’s done, you can sit back down.
    • The second call is final; they will call you by name, and you’ll collect your passport along with any change (if you paid 2,000 baht) and a receipt for your transaction.

General tips for a hassle-free visa extension

To help ensure a smooth extension process, keep these tips in mind:

  • Ensure you are registered in the immigration system through your current accommodation. Ask your hotel to handle your TM30 registration in advance to avoid complications later.
  • There is no need to print any forms online; you can find everything you need at the office.
  • Be mindful of the office hours and arrive early to avoid long lines. They used to close for a couple of hours during lunch, but this may have changed with the new location.
  • Keep in mind that the stamp will take up half a page in your passport, so check your passport space before visiting.
  • You don't have to rush to extend your visa; it’s valid for 30 days from the expiration date of your current visa or permit. For example, if you entered on November 2 and your stamp allows you to stay until December 1, extending your visa on November 24 will grant you permission until December 31.
  • We completed the process in about 50 minutes, visiting on a Tuesday afternoon. A local resident mentioned that Mondays and Fridays tend to be busier, but there's no need to arrive at 6 AM!

Now you can see how easy it is to obtain your Thailand visa extension in Chiang Mai! With a little preparation and these guidelines, you’ll be all set to enjoy your extended stay in this beautiful country.
