Tekapo and Pukaki Lakes Route in New Zealand

Are you planning to embark on the breathtaking journey through Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki? Lucky you! This post will guide you through one of New Zealand’s most enchanting routes, showcasing its stunning beauty and unique experiences along the way.
Traveling through New Zealand is an adventure that sets a very high bar, as it constantly immerses you in dreamlike landscapes that seem plucked straight from a fairy tale. The first time you see them, you’ll be amazed. The second time, you'll be in awe. By the third, you’ll appreciate them, and by the fourth, you’ll be smiling. However, by the fifth, it becomes the new norm.
Yet, there is one place that will always leave you speechless, no matter how many times you visit: the lake region. It’s not just one lake, but two (technically three, but Lake Ohau is often considered the ugly duckling). The distance between them is sufficient to recover from the Stendhal syndrome you experienced at the first before succumbing again to the beauty of the second. If you’re fortunate enough to traverse the route of Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki, keep reading (and just know that we might be a tad envious).
Discovering Lake Tekapo
Have you ever seen that iconic image of a stunning, vast blue lake adorned with pink and purple flowers? Well, that’s Lake Tekapo. It’s even more beautiful in person—an absolute visual treat! It’s no wonder that we find ourselves falling in love with these places (though, allow me to add a little drama to the narrative!).
As if the scenery weren’t breathtaking enough, you’ll stumble upon a special corner: the Church of the Good Shepherd, built in 1935. This charming church is one of the most picturesque and sought-after wedding venues, making even the most determined single person contemplate saying “I do.”
Not too far off, you’ll find a bronze statue of a shepherd dog, erected in 1968 to honor the contributions of Collie dogs in herding. It’s a lovely tribute to these hardworking animals.
Moreover, Lake Tekapo is famed for being one of the best spots for astronomical observation, both in New Zealand and globally. The Mount John Observatory offers incredible views of the Milky Way on clear nights. If you have the chance, try to spend at least one night here. Fun fact: the name “Tekapo” comes from Maori, meaning “mat under the sky.”
Unveiling Lake Pukaki
Lake Pukaki is simply unparalleled. It might just be the most beautiful lake we encountered in New Zealand! The lake resembles an enormous slushie in anise flavor; its vibrant blue hue is due to glacial flour particles settled at the bottom. It feels as if someone added a splash of dye, but it’s all natural—what a marvel!
The temptation to dive in is strong (even though common sense reminds you that the water is freezing). I’m sure someone adventurous like Joan has taken a dip, but we were content exploring the surroundings and soaking in the spectacular views.
What’s more, the majestic Mount Cook rises behind the lake, providing a stunning backdrop. Make sure to add ‘Lake Pukaki’ to your bucket list—you won’t regret it!
Planning Your Visit to Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki
How to Get There: We arrived from the Chamberlains Ford Recreation Reserve camping area, near Lincoln in Christchurch. Here’s the route:
- Take State Highway 1 south from Christchurch.
- Follow the signs towards Lake Tekapo and enjoy the scenic drive.
- Once you arrive, follow the signs to Lake Pukaki for the ultimate experience.
Where to Sleep: Camping at Lake Tekapo is not free, so we opted to stay at Lake Pukaki, where free camping is available (for both self-contained and non-self-contained vehicles). The facilities can be basic, but hey, it’s free! The camping area is just before the bridge leading to the i-Site. There’s a small hill to the right with dirt paths leading up to it; just pick one of them. There are two sections: one facing the lake (which is where we stayed and it’s truly worth it) and another on the opposite side of the hill (more sheltered with quicker access to the restroom).
So, if you’re planning to visit Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki, enjoy every moment! You’re in for a treat.
