While it may not feature jaw-dropping scenery at every turn, it certainly has its moments that will leave you pleasantly surprised.

What to See on the Samoeng Loop?

Starting your journey counterclockwise, the first thing you'll encounter is traffic. The initial 15 km stretch leads you towards Mae Rim, where you’ll find yourself amidst a mix of tourist attractions and local charm. This section is often referred to as the "Highway 1096," colloquially known as the "road from hell" due to the heavy presence of tourist vans and various attractions.

But why the dramatic nickname? This stretch is infamous for housing numerous tourist traps, including the notorious Tiger Kingdom, snake shows, and various wildlife exhibitions. While some attractions are less than desirable, you can also discover natural spots like the Maesa Waterfall, where a small entrance fee provides access to a beautiful area for relaxation and photos. Alternatively, keep driving to find another waterfall that’s free!

What truly captivated us during this leg of the journey were the charming riverside restaurants. Picture this: dining on tatami mats placed above the flowing river, surrounded by the serene sounds of nature. The ambiance is refreshing, making it an ideal stop for a hearty meal and a break from the ride.

As we continued, we reached the Samoeng View Point, which offers a great overlook of the area. We took a small detour to the Mong village of Maesa, where we stepped away from the bustling tourist scene and into a more authentic experience of local life. Here, we witnessed villagers going about their daily routines, which provided a stark contrast to the commercialized attractions nearby.

But the real gem of the trip was yet to come. After asking locals for directions, we found ourselves at the Mae Sa Cave, just 5 km past Samoeng. This intriguing cave, nestled in a stunning natural setting, is an adventure in itself. Inside, you’ll encounter various cave-dwelling creatures, from bats to spiders, adding to the thrill of exploration.

On our way back, the landscape transformed into picturesque rice fields, quaint villages, and temples. One particularly amusing moment occurred when Moha jokingly believed he’d encounter a tiger at one of the temples, which a local monk playfully teased him about. We also stumbled upon a beautiful white temple perched on a hill, perfect for spiritual retreats, alongside quirky attractions like giant dinosaurs and food trucks fashioned from vintage Volkswagen vans.

How to Navigate the Samoeng Loop?

To ensure you have the best experience on your ride, here are some practical tips and information:

• While many blogs suggest completing the loop in a clockwise direction, we found it more enjoyable to ride counterclockwise, allowing us to experience the bustling tourist spots first before diving into the route’s hidden treasures.
• After Mae Rim, keep an eye out for the well-marked turnoff onto Highway 1096, making it easy to start your adventure.
• The 30-km stretch of Highway 1096 has a tourist information office about 3.5 km in; stop here for a free map and local insights.
• At the end of Highway 1096, you'll reach a fork; head left towards Hang Dong to return to Chiang Mai or right to explore Samoeng and the cave.
• To reach the cave, continue through Samoeng, taking the first right turn and then another right after a few kilometers. The cave entrance will be well-marked.
• The entry fee to the cave is 20 baht, which includes the use of lanterns for exploring inside.
• Refueling is straightforward, with gas stations scattered along the route, though it’s best to fill up before you start your adventure.
