Our morning was filled with delightful wildlife encounters. As we settled down for breakfast in one of the most enchanting picnic spots we've ever visited, we were approached by an unusual bird. It was a weka, an endemic species resembling a mix between a kiwi and a dinosaur. The mother weka bravely approached us, begging for crumbs to take back to her chick. It was a heartwarming moment that showcased the unique wildlife of New Zealand.

During our stop, we encountered an interesting character on a unique motorcycle, who seemed to be following us around. It made for a fun photo opportunity!

As we drove on towards Reefton, we were captivated by the beauty of the landscapes around us. This small town, reminiscent of the 1960s, served as a perfect gateway into the interior mountains. The picturesque roads led us through stunning scenery, culminating in our night’s stay at the Deer Valley Campsite.

At Deer Valley, we found ourselves immersed in nature, nestled beside a serene river. Though the campsite had a somewhat desolate feel, it provided basic amenities such as non-flush toilets and a peaceful environment to unwind.

• Accommodation in Westport: There’s a parking space behind the i-Site, perfect for overnight stays. While we encountered some local revelers late at night, they were respectful and didn’t disturb our rest.
• Cape Foulwind: There are two parking areas available at Cape Foulwind. We parked closer to the seal colony, but there’s also a lot by the lighthouse where you can embark on an hour-long hiking trail.
• Additional Attractions: Ask at the i-Site about nearby wild beaches and other hidden gems to explore around the Pancake Rocks area.
