Discovering the Kong Lor Cave

On our quest for adventure, we decided to deviate from our planned route to visit Kong Lor Cave. The journey from Vientiane was straightforward, with direct buses available, yet we were aware that continuing to our next destination would pose more challenges. Upon arriving in the quaint village of Kong Lor around 5 PM, we noticed that the bus from Vientiane gradually emptied, leaving just three travelers: ourselves and another tourist named Anouk, who would accompany us on the following leg of our journey.

The limited accommodation options in the village simplified our decision-making process. We quickly settled into a cozy guesthouse, enjoyed a humble dinner of rice and noodles, and prepared for the adventure that awaited us the next day.

The Journey to the Cave

The following morning, we set out on foot towards the cave, which is conveniently located just a kilometer from the village. To traverse the cave, we opted for a boat ride—yes, a boat! This unique feature sets Kong Lor apart, as the cave is interlaced with a river that flows through it. Over the course of the 7 kilometers we traveled, we experienced a fascinating transformation, feeling the effects of darkness, humidity, and pressure as we navigated through the heart of the mountain.

The cave’s interior was a stunning spectacle, with breathtaking formations and intricate stalactites greeting us at every turn. We made several stops along the way—not just for admiring the natural beauty, but also to navigate through shallow waters where the boat occasionally got stuck. Our jovial boatman encouraged us to disembark and give him a push, adding a light-hearted touch to our adventure.

Emerging into the Light

As we finally emerged from the cave, the natural sunlight was a welcome relief. Our bodies relaxed, and we took a moment to enjoy a snack with an Italian-Spanish couple we had met during our journey. This brief pause before heading back through the cave made the experience all the more enriching. The return trip felt quicker, as we had mastered the art of timing our exits and entries to avoid the shallow spots.

After our exhilarating exploration, we wasted no time in the village. We enjoyed a quick meal before catching the first bus heading south, eager to see what other adventures awaited us in Laos.
