Koh Lipe: A Dog's Life in Paradise

Imagine a tropical paradise where time seems to stand still, where the sun kisses the horizon, and the gentle waves of the sea create a soothing melody. Welcome to Koh Lipe, a jewel in the Andaman Sea that offers a slice of heaven not only for travelers but for the local canine residents who truly embody the phrase “life is good.”
In Koh Lipe, dogs have mastered the art of living. Their daily routine consists of three primary activities that reflect the island's laid-back vibe:
- Lounging on the beach, preferably under the shade of sun loungers occupied by sunburnt tourists.
- Enjoying refreshing dips in the warm waters, essential for cooling off in the tropical heat.
- Scoring tasty morsels, whether fish, chicken, or whatever they can beg from friendly visitors.
Inspired by our furry friends, we spent four blissful days on this stunning island, indulging in what the Italians call the “arte del cazzeggio.” No alarms, just pure relaxation: beach time, swimming, sunbathing, meals, and afternoon siestas (after all, swimming can be tiring!). Our routine also included capturing the beauty of Koh Lipe through photos, savoring the local cuisine, and enjoying complimentary Wi-Fi from our rustic bungalow. Our only reason for leaving this paradise was our dwindling funds; otherwise, we might have stayed indefinitely!
What Makes Koh Lipe Special?
Koh Lipe is nestled in the southern part of Thailand, within the Tarutao National Marine Park, just a stone's throw from Malaysia. This tropical haven is primarily composed of three breathtaking beaches: Pattaya Beach, Sunrise Beach, and Sunset Beach. We chose to stay at Pattaya Beach, as we encountered some pesky creatures in the waters of Sunrise Beach that had us itching for days (though later travelers told us they likely didn't exist!). Sunset Beach, on the other hand, is perfect for evening relaxation with a cold drink and a swim, all while watching the sun melt into the horizon.
During our stay, we met another colorful character that became a highlight of our adventure: Super Frankie, a lovable local dog who stole our hearts despite his allegiance to Juventus! As our visit drew to a close, we felt a pang of sadness to say goodbye to the island, to Franco, and to the delightful dogs of Koh Lipe. Although it may not be “our island” (that title goes to Koh Rong), Koh Lipe left a lasting impression.
Essential Information for Travelers
Getting to Koh Lipe: A Travel Guide
Our journey to Koh Lipe started at Ton Sai beach in Railay, where we took a boat to Ao Nang (cost: 100 baht). From Ao Nang, we hopped on a shared van to Krabi’s bus station (60 baht), and lucky for us, a bus to Trang left just thirty minutes later (115 baht). The entire journey took about six hours. After staying overnight in Trang and comparing agency prices, we opted for a combined transport package to Pakbara port, followed by a speedboat to Koh Lipe for 600 baht. The minivan ride lasted about 1.5 hours, and the boat ride took another 1.5 hours.
Accommodation: Where to Stay in Koh Lipe
In Trang, we stayed at Ko Teng Backpackers, where a shared room cost us 180 baht. On Koh Lipe, we opted for Serene Resort, enjoying a cozy bungalow complete with a bathroom and Wi-Fi for 500 baht per night.

When to Avoid Visiting Koh Lipe
Though Koh Lipe is a year-round destination, there are times when it may be better to plan your visit elsewhere. Additionally, many local businesses may close or reduce their services during the off-season, affecting your overall experience.
