Ferry public transportation options

The public ferry service, a budget-friendly option, operates under the number 308, connecting Malé with Dhiffushi and making a stop at Huraa. This ferry runs daily, with the exception of Mondays and Fridays. The ferry departs from Malé at 14:30 and reaches Huraa by 16:00, while return trips leave Huraa at 08:00, arriving back in Malé at 09:40. The total journey takes about one and a half hours.

Here are some key details about taking the ferry:

  • Departure Point: The ferry leaves from Villingili Ferry Terminal, located on the west side of Malé.
  • Cost: The ticket price is 22 MVR (approximately €1.2), a flat rate regardless of your boarding or disembarking point.
  • Recommendation: Arrive 30 minutes early to purchase your ticket at the terminal. For return journeys, you can pay directly on the boat.

The ferry remains our top recommendation for budget-conscious travelers seeking to reach Huraa, but don’t overlook the additional cost of transport to the ferry terminal. A taxi from the airport to the terminal will typically cost between $8 and $10.

Shared speed boat services

If you prefer a faster journey, shared speed boats are a popular alternative. Two main companies, Sea Shine and Anax, operate several trips throughout the day:

  • Sea Shine: Departs at 11:30, 15:30, and 22:15, with the Friday morning trip moved to 9:30.
  • Anax: Offers departures at 11:45, 15:00, 16:45, and 22:00. On Thursdays and Saturdays, an additional trip is scheduled at 19:00, while Friday morning trips are adjusted to 9:00.

Both speed boats leave from the northern port of Malé, directly across from the airport (jetty 5 or 6). There is a convenient boat service connecting the airport to the port every 10-15 minutes for just 10 MVR (about $1), but be aware that there are no direct boats from the airport to Huraa.

In terms of travel time and cost, both speed boat services offer a similar experience: a swift 30-minute ride for around 150 MVR (approximately $10). Reservations can be made by calling the companies directly; hotel staff can assist with this:

  • Sea Shine: 7741313 / 9866886
  • Anax: 9141355 / 7738181 / 9800111

The speed boat is highly recommended for travelers seeking a quicker and more flexible travel option, as it reduces travel time significantly compared to the public ferry. Our experience with Sea Shine was smooth and efficient.

Private boat hire for a personalized journey

For those preferring a more exclusive travel experience, hiring a private boat is an option worth considering. We stayed a night in Hulhumalé, where our accommodation arranged a private speedboat transfer for us. This option allows you to leave at your convenience, with direct departures from either the airport or Malé.

Here are some points to consider about private boat rentals:

  • Cost: Expect to pay around $150 for the whole boat, which can be economical if shared among a group.
  • Flexibility: You can choose your departure time, making it easier to align with your travel schedule.
  • Luxury: This option offers a more comfortable and private experience, ideal for those looking to travel in style.

Private boat hire is particularly appealing for groups or those who prefer a more luxurious travel experience, as the cost can be spread out among multiple passengers.

Understanding the local travel landscape

Traveling to Huraa provides not just access to beautiful landscapes but also an opportunity to immerse yourself in the Maldivian way of life. Each mode of transportation offers a different perspective of local culture, from the communal ferry rides to the intimate experience of a private boat. Here’s what you can expect:

  • The ferry ride gives a taste of daily life for locals, often bustling with families and workers.
