How to Get to Dhiffushi from Malé All Transportation Options

Traveling to the Maldives is a dream for many, and among the countless picturesque islands, Dhiffushi stands out as a gem worth exploring. This local island, located just 35 kilometers from the capital, Malé, offers an authentic Maldivian experience away from the typical resort scene. If you're planning to visit Dhiffushi, understanding your transportation options is crucial for a smooth journey. Let’s dive into how to reach this beautiful island from Malé.
The journey to Dhiffushi can be accomplished through three primary modes of transportation: the public ferry, shared speedboat, and private boat hire. Each option has its own advantages and caters to different preferences and budgets. Here’s a closer look at these transportation methods:
Ferry service from Malé to Dhiffushi
The public ferry is an economical choice for travelers. The ferry you would want to take is the number 308, which operates the route between Malé and Dhiffushi. This ferry stops at several local islands along the way, including Hinmafushi, Huraa, and Thulusdhoo. It operates every day except on Mondays and Fridays, with a scheduled departure from Malé at 14:30, arriving in Dhiffushi around 17:40. The return trip also follows the same schedule, leaving Dhiffushi at 06:30 and reaching Malé by 09:40, making the total travel time just over three hours.
The ferry departs from the Villingili ferry terminal, located on the western side of the island. The ticket price is approximately 22 MVR (around 1.2€), and this cost remains the same regardless of whether you disembark at Dhiffushi or one of the intermediate islands. It’s advisable to arrive at the terminal a bit earlier to purchase your ticket directly from the booth. For the return trip, payment can be made directly on the boat.
If you plan to take the ferry on the same day you arrive at Malé airport, remember to account for additional transportation costs to the ferry terminal—typically around $8-10 for a taxi ride.
During a recent trip, we spent three days in Huraa before heading to Dhiffushi. Opting for the ferry allowed us to save some money while enjoying the stunning views along the way. If you don't mind spending a little extra time traveling and can align with the ferry's schedule, this option is perfect for budget-conscious travelers.
For those looking for a faster alternative, shared speedboat services are available. Currently, Mee Express Altec is the only company providing speedboat transfers from Malé and Malé airport to Dhiffushi. The cost for a one-way ticket is approximately $35, and the journey usually takes less than an hour.
Here are the current schedules:

The speedboats depart from Jetty 7, located in the northern part of Malé, directly across from the airport. One of the advantages of this service is that it also stops at the airport jetty, making it convenient for arriving travelers.
This option is highly recommended as the price difference from the ferry is minimal, and the journey is significantly shorter, allowing you more time to enjoy your vacation. Personally, we opted for a different speedboat service named Sea Shine, and it was a great experience.
Private boat charter
If you're traveling in a group or prefer more flexibility with your travel times, hiring a private boat is an excellent option. Private charters can be arranged to depart at your convenience from Malé or the airport. Prices can vary depending on where you book, but expect to pay around $250 for the entire boat. It's a good idea to discuss this option with your accommodation in Dhiffushi, as they may assist in arranging the booking.
This method is particularly appealing for families or groups, as the overall costs can be shared, making it a more affordable option than it might initially seem.
These three transportation options provide a variety of choices for traveling from Malé to Dhiffushi. Depending on your budget and preferences, you can select the one that best suits your travel plans.
