Upon our arrival at Karangahake Gorge, we were left in awe, taking in the dramatic cliffs that towered above us and the roaring river that carved its way through the gorge.
This area, rich in history, was once buzzing with activity during the gold rush in the late 19th century. Today, remnants of those times can still be seen in the form of old mining equipment, tunnels, and walking tracks that allow visitors to step back in time.

Upon arriving, we parked our vehicle in a designated area overlooking the powerful river below. There are several walking tracks that begin here, inviting you to explore the historical remnants of the gold mining era. The tracks are well-marked and cater to various fitness levels, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the breathtaking views.
Initially, we needed to cross a swaying suspension bridge that added a thrilling element to our adventure. But this was just the beginning; the old railway line used by the mining companies is now a part of the walking trail, allowing us to traverse across various steel beam bridges that span the river and road.

- Route details: After crossing the main bridge, we veered left to traverse a smaller bridge, leading us to ruins of the mining operations. Returning to the main path, we kept the river to our right and continued towards another set of ruins, eventually reaching the steel bridge that crosses the highway.
- Returning to the start: After exploring the tunnel, we crossed yet another bridge and followed a path next to the river, which led back to our parking spot after a little over a kilometer.

For those seeking sun and sand, Waihi Beach is a short drive away and boasts a warmer climate, especially during winter months.
