Discovering the Enigmatic Huka Falls

Our journey took an intriguing turn as we veered off the main road to visit the famous Huka Falls. Known for their beauty, these falls are a must-see for anyone traveling through the area. However, our first attempt led us astray; instead of cascading waters, we found ourselves at a quirky shrimp fishing park. An unexpected detour, indeed!

Once we found our way back, we encountered a wandering traveler—an eclectic mix of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean culture, backpack in tow. It’s a common sight in New Zealand, where backpackers often explore the vast landscapes on foot. Our vehicle, a sporty two-seater, was hardly suitable for offering a lift, but the sight of fellow adventurers is always a reminder of the diverse community that inhabits this land.

Reaching Huka Falls was a mixed bag of emotions. While the sheer volume of water flowing through was indeed impressive, the falls themselves didn’t boast a grand height—perhaps only 20 meters. It felt as though the name carried more weight than the actual spectacle, leaving us yearning for a more dramatic view.

Surreal Surroundings: The Beauty of Lake Taupo

The true essence of our journey was encapsulated in the stunning scenery surrounding Lake Taupo. With the snow-capped peaks of the Pureora Forest Park as a backdrop, we found tranquility along the lakeshores. Our nights were spent in the company of an eccentric fellow camper who seemed determined to stack rocks on his vehicle—a peculiar but harmless endeavor that sparked our curiosity.

Every sunrise brought a fresh canvas of colors across the sky, casting a magical glow over the lake. These moments were not just beautiful, they were transformative, urging us to pause and appreciate the simple joys of nature.

Turangi: A Peaceful Retreat

Not stopping at the town of Taupo just yet, we planned to return in the future, possibly en route to Tongariro National Park. Instead, we made our way to the southernmost edge of the lake, Turangi. Here, we took the opportunity to recharge our batteries—quite literally—with a much-needed bath and a chance to refresh.

Afterward, we headed to nearby Tokaanu Bay, where we parked at a serene lakeside spot. This was a haven for boat owners, and we found it the perfect backdrop for lazy days filled with reading, enjoying breakfast alongside the elegant black swans, and simply soaking in the peaceful atmosphere.

Completing the Circle: Stunning Views and Spooky Vibes

As we finished our circumnavigation of Lake Taupo, we traveled along a road offering breathtaking vistas that seemed to stretch endlessly. Our final night was spent in a small forest near a river—an idyllic location that could have easily served as a filming site for a horror movie, where unsuspecting travelers meet sinister fates. Despite its eerie potential, the beauty of the area was undeniable, captivating us once more.

Essential Information for Lake Taupo Travelers

When planning your adventure around Lake Taupo, knowing where to stay can enhance your experience tremendously. Here are some helpful options:

  • The first stop was a parking area beside the lake along SH1. Although the facilities were basic—a rather shabby non-flush toilet available 24 hours—the stunning lake views made it worthwhile.
  • Next, we stayed at Tokaanu Bay in a parking area designed for boat enthusiasts. This site offered clean flush toilets and drinking water, making it a comfortable and peaceful option.
  • Lastly, we camped at Whakamaru, a beautiful location nestled in a forest alongside the Waikato River. While it was a bit chilly and had a slightly insecure feel, the fishing opportunities and tranquility were incredible. The facilities included clean non-flush toilets available 24 hours, though potable water was not provided.
