Important Considerations for Your Journey

  • Starting Point in Jaén: We kick off our journey in Jaén, the northernmost province, assuming you’ll arrive from the central or northern parts of Spain.
  • Visit All Major Cities: The itinerary includes all the capitals of Andalucía, ensuring you don't miss any essential sights in each city.
  • Driving is Essential: This route is best undertaken by car. While public transport connects the capitals, many beautiful attractions would be missed without the flexibility of a vehicle. If you don't own a car, consider renting one.
  • Beware of Enchantment: There’s a high chance you’ll fall in love with the charm of Andalucía, and you might find yourself wanting to linger longer than planned.

Jaén + Úbeda and Baeza (2 Days)

Our journey begins in Jaén, often overlooked but rich in history and beauty. Did you know that it boasts the highest number of castles in Europe? It is also home to two UNESCO World Heritage cities, Úbeda and Baeza. While there are no beaches, the region features numerous natural pools, rivers, and waterfalls.

You could easily spend three weeks here, but for this adventure, we suggest dedicating just two days: one for Jaén city and another for exploring the magnificent towns of Úbeda and Baeza.

Granada (2 Days)

Granada is the next stop, and if you thought you could rush through, think again! This city deserves your full attention, as it is a treasure trove of history and architecture. Prepare for an exhilarating exploration of its iconic neighborhoods, especially the Albaicín and Sacromonte. The hike up to the Mirador de San Nicolás rewards you with breathtaking views of the Alhambra.

On your second day, rise early to visit the spectacular Alhambra. Be sure to book your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment; this stunning palace complex is a must-see. Afterward, explore the vibrant streets of the historic center, particularly the Realejo district. Don't forget to indulge in some of the city’s famous tapas!

Córdoba (1 Day)

After a night of tapas and drinks, it’s time for an early start to explore Córdoba, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Wander through the Jewish Quarter, marvel at the endless arches of the Mezquita, stroll across the Roman bridge, and take in the vibrant flower pots adorning the patios. Don't miss out on tasting the best salmorejo you've ever had!

If you’re a time management expert, consider stopping at Medina Azahara on your way into the city, a recently designated UNESCO World Heritage site.

Sevilla (2 Days)

Spending only two days in Sevilla might feel like a tragedy, but with careful planning, you can experience the essence of this vibrant city. Explore the historic center, visit the Catedral and the Real Alcázar, enjoy the delicious croquettes at Casa Ricardo, and take a photo at the magnificent Plaza de España. To wrap up your day, don’t miss a flamenco show in the picturesque neighborhood of Triana.

Exhausting days? Absolutely, but the thrill of creating lasting memories is worth every step.

Huelva + Beaches (3 Days)

After busy days of sightseeing, it’s time for some relaxation on the stunning beaches of the Costa de la Luz. The coastline is renowned for its long stretches of golden sand and pristine natural surroundings. Be sure to visit some of these beautiful beaches: Playa de Matalascañas (near Doñana Park), Playa de Islantilla, Playa de Isla Canela, Playa de El Portil, or Playa de Punta Umbría.

But the allure of Huelva doesn't end at the beach. Explore charming towns like Niebla and Cortegana, the famous Riotinto mines, and of course, the magnificent Doñana Natural Park. If you decide to dedicate these three days solely to beach time, we certainly won’t judge!

Cádiz + Route through the White Towns (3 Days)

As we continue exploring the Atlantic coast of Andalucía, dedicate an entire day to discovering Cádiz city, and perhaps visit charming coastal towns like Chipiona, Rota, Tarifa, or Conil de la Frontera. The Puerto de Santa María is also worth a visit, albeit larger than you might expect!

After enjoying the sun, sand, and sea in Huelva, Cádiz offers even more opportunities for beach fun. Consider taking a dip at Playa de Bolonia, Zahara de los Atunes, Playa del Palmar, or Cala de Roche.

Your final day will be dedicated to a scenic drive through the White Towns of Cádiz. We recommend staying overnight in Ronda (Málaga), conveniently located just half an hour from Setenil de las Bodegas, setting you up perfectly for the next leg of your journey.

Málaga + Route through Towns and Beaches (4 Days)

Having reached the midpoint of our journey, it's time to relish the enchanting city of Ronda, known for its stunning views and romantic ambiance. Beyond its iconic viewpoints, Ronda invites you to explore its charming streets and rich history.

You’ll face a delightful dilemma: head towards the Costa del Sol or venture inland to Antequera, known for its historical significance and incredible landscapes, including the famous Caminito del Rey. We personally favor the latter, but remember to book your spot in advance!

Though it may mean sacrificing a day of beach time, you won’t regret wandering through Antequera's sights. But don’t worry, beach lovers! After exploring, the stunning Mediterranean coastline awaits. With nearly 1,000 km of coastline, you'll find plenty of opportunities for sun-soaked relaxation. You can base yourself in Málaga and enjoy visiting landmarks such as the Cathedral, Alcazaba, and the Roman theater, along with exploring Muelle Uno and the vibrant La Malagueta beach.

Alternatively, you might prefer a coastal escape between Estepona, Marbella, or Torremolinos. If time allows, try to squeeze in a quick visit to Mijas.

As you leave Málaga for Almería, plan to visit two of Andalucía's most picturesque towns: Frigiliana and Nerja. Spending the night in Nerja is a splendid option, allowing you to unwind at Calahonda beach and savor tapas at Pulgarillas.

Almería + Cabo de Gata (4 Days)

As your journey draws to a close, prepare for a spectacular finale in Almería and the stunning Cabo de Gata. While Almería may not be the most glamorous capital, it has its own unique charm and a fascinating history worth exploring, including the impressive Alcazaba, Cathedral, and the Alquife port. If you’re a foodie, you'll be delighted to discover that Almería serves some of the best tapas in Spain!

And let’s not forget the breathtaking Cabo de Gata. Spend three days soaking in its beautiful beaches and coves, exploring its charming fishing villages, and experiencing a journey within a journey. Before heading home, if time permits, make a stop at the Tabernas Desert, the only desert in Europe and a place that will transport you to another world. Be prepared; you will leave with a longing to return!

Map of the Three-Week Road Trip through Andalucía

Here is the map detailing the route we propose. It is customizable to your preferences, but it serves as a great starting point to visualize your journey:

Two-Week Itinerary in Andalucía

Recognizing that not everyone has three weeks to spare, we present two alternatives for exploring Andalucía in two weeks. The first half of the journey coincides with our longer itinerary, covering Jaén, Córdoba, Granada, and Sevilla. From there, you have two options:

  • Option A: Explore the western part of Andalucía, visiting Huelva and its beaches, Cádiz for a tour of the White Towns, and concluding in Málaga with a visit to its towns.
  • Option B: Directly head to Málaga to explore its towns, then proceed to Almería to discover the incredible Cabo de Gata region.

We understand that there are countless unforgettable spots we may have overlooked, but after years of exploring our adopted home, we believe this itinerary is quite comprehensive and realistic. Yes, it may be a bit rushed, but with just two or three weeks, it’s challenging to explore Andalucía in depth!

We hope you enjoy an unforgettable trip, and that our road trip through Andalucía for two and three weeks helps you make the most of it. Have you visited this beautiful region before? What was your favorite place?
