Vienna is divided into a total of 23 districts, but when it comes to tourist accommodation, focusing on District 1 (Innere Stadt, the very heart of the city) and the neighboring districts from 2 to 9 is highly recommended. Let’s delve into the most suggested areas and explain why they are worth your consideration.

Innere Stadt: The Ideal Place to Stay in Vienna

Innere Stadt is the historic center and heart of Vienna, bordered by the Ringstrasse, a circular avenue that began construction in the late 19th century, transforming urban planning in the city by replacing ancient walls. It is often regarded as one of the most magnificent monumental avenues in Europe.

This area boasts a vibrant atmosphere with a plethora of hotels, restaurants, and cafes, making it the most lively part of Vienna. Additionally, you'll find the city’s main tourist attractions within walking distance, making it an ideal base for exploring.

However, be prepared for higher prices; Innere Stadt is the most expensive area in the city. With some luck and early planning (booking several weeks in advance), you might find interesting deals. However, it’s rare to find decent accommodation below €100 a night unless you opt for hostels.

Leopoldstadt: Our Favorite Area in Vienna

Just across the Danube Canal to the north of the center lies Leopoldstadt, which corresponds to District 2. This was the area where we stayed during our last visit to Vienna, and we genuinely enjoyed it.

In just 10-15 minutes on foot, you can reach the city center. Leopoldstadt is also adjacent to the Prater, one of the city's most famous parks, which is home to the oldest amusement park in Austria. The neighborhood is peaceful and safe, filled with local shops, supermarkets, and a good range of accommodation options, from hotels to tourist apartments.

Wieden: Another Great Option to Stay in Vienna

Wieden (District 4) was our choice during a previous visit to the city since we found an irresistible deal on a hotel near the Wien Hauptbahnhof, Vienna's main train station.

This neighborhood is quiet and features several monumental sites, including the Church of San Carlo (a short walk from the Opera) and the museum district. Accommodations here tend to be more affordable and of good quality, primarily catering to business travelers.

Landstrasse: A Diverse District with Unique Attractions

One of the largest districts in Vienna, Landstrasse, offers a variety of accommodation options, but be mindful when selecting your area. Generally, the closer you are to the historic center and the Wien Mitte station, the better your choice will be.

This district is home to the famous Hundertwasserhaus, known for its unique architecture. While some parts are a bit further away from the center, they can still be charming and attractive. If you find accommodation near this area, it could be a great option.

Best Hostels in Vienna

It’s important to note that Vienna is not an especially cheap city, but finding convenient accommodations is definitely possible. If you're seeking a hotel with a private room, our best advice is to book in advance, especially during peak seasons like Christmas.

On the other hand, if you're just looking for a bed at the lowest cost, hostels are the way to go. You can find dormitory beds for around €20-30 per night and double rooms starting at €40.
