Best areas to stay in Dubrovnik and our experience

Choosing where to stay in Dubrovnik can significantly influence your travel experience. With its stunning architecture and rich history, this Croatian gem offers a variety of lodging options that cater to different preferences, budgets, and desires. Are you drawn to the vibrant heart of the city, or would you rather enjoy a quieter retreat with breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea? The decision can feel overwhelming, but worry not! We've navigated through the many choices for you, sharing insights on the best areas to stay in Dubrovnik.
Dubrovnik captivates visitors with its charm, but not all neighborhoods offer the same experience. Whether you wish to immerse yourself in medieval walls, enjoy a seaside breakfast, or step out in flip-flops to plunge into the sea, the right area for you will depend on your personal preferences. Here’s a comprehensive guide on the most recommended neighborhoods for finding accommodation in Dubrovnik.
Exploring the Historical Center (Old Town)
Staying in the heart of Dubrovnik is a magical experience. Picture walking along ancient stone streets, surrounded by historic buildings, bustling restaurants, bars, and museums—all within arm's reach. However, this idyllic location comes with a price, often a steep one.
- The perks: Being in the center means you can explore everything on foot, making it ideal for first-time visitors eager to make the most of their time.
- The downsides: It’s the priciest area (not just for accommodation), involves numerous stairs, and offers little access for vehicles. If noise bothers you, consider other options.
→ Recommended Hotels: Kenova Apartments, Private Accommodation Linda.
Situated just east of the Old Town, Ploče offers some of the most breathtaking views of Dubrovnik. This neighborhood features elegant hotels and apartments, providing a peaceful retreat after a day of sightseeing.
- The perks: Spectacular views of the sea and Old Town, a more tranquil atmosphere just a 10-minute walk away, and a solid selection of quality accommodations.
- The downsides: The area has its share of stairs, and prices are not significantly lower than those in the center.
→ Recommended Hotels: Love Dubrovnik Hostel, A Bright Hideaway.
Relaxing in Lapad, Near the Beach
If you're looking to escape the hustle and bustle while still enjoying comfort, Lapad is perfectly situated. Known for its seaside promenade, beaches, and local restaurants, this area is a short bus or Uber ride from the city center.
- The perks: Ideal for beach lovers seeking a tranquil atmosphere, spacious accommodations, and reasonable prices, along with a great local dining scene.
- The downsides: It is farther from the historical center and lacks the historical charm found in other neighborhoods.
→ Recommended Hotels: Hotel Splendid, Hotel Uvala.
Gruž: The Backpacker's Paradise
Gruž is an authentic neighborhood, slightly removed from the city center but easily accessible by bus. Home to the main bus station, a local market, and affordable accommodations, this area is perfect for budget travelers.
- The perks: More affordable prices, a genuine local atmosphere, stunning views, and quick bus connections to the city center.
- The downsides: It lacks the historical charm, and dining options can be limited without venturing out.
→ Recommended Hotel: GH Maria
Finding Serenity in Babin Kuk
North of Lapad and further from the historical core, Babin Kuk is known for its luxurious hotels and resorts, making it ideal for those seeking a relaxing vacation. While it may lack local flair, it offers plenty of amenities for a restful getaway.
- The perks: Hotels equipped with all necessary comforts, a calm and well-maintained area, and direct access to beautiful beaches.
- The downsides: It is primarily aimed at resort tourists, resulting in a less authentic experience and greater isolation.
→ Recommended Hotels: Apartment Mara, Villa Katarina Dubrovnik.
Our Budget-Friendly Accommodation Experience
If you're wondering where to stay in Dubrovnik, we have a simple yet delightful recommendation. We were fortunate to find Guesthouse Maria, where we enjoyed a cozy atmosphere that felt more like home than a standard hotel. Arriving on the day of a family birthday celebration made our experience even more special.
This homestay experience is perfect for travelers on a budget, with families often hosting guests in their spacious homes. The hospitality is heartwarming, thanks to Maria, the mother of the family, and her daughter Marianna, who assists with daily tasks and is always ready to help with any traveler inquiries.
The guesthouse is well-kept, with clean rooms and a large, tidy shared bathroom. Amenities include air conditioning and Wi-Fi. A common area with a kitchen and dining space allows guests to save money during their travels through the Pearl of the Adriatic.
The best part? The stunning views from our room, overlooking the bay and the new port. We had the pleasure of enjoying delicious tortellini and cevapcici while soaking in breathtaking sunsets.
We highly recommend this option for anyone searching for affordable accommodation in Dubrovnik. While the location may not be the most convenient, it offers a glimpse into authentic local life, far from tourist crowds.
