Morning itinerary for a day in Venice
Let’s break down your day into three main sections: morning, midday, and afternoon. First up, the morning highlights you should prioritize as soon as you arrive in Venice:
Rialto District
Assuming you’ve managed to get out of bed at a reasonable hour, you’ll likely be arriving at Venice Santa Lucia Station. As you step out, prepare for your first glimpse of Venice’s charm as you make your way to the iconic Rialto Bridge. As you ascend the bridge, take a moment to appreciate the stunning views of the bustling Grand Canal. However, resist the urge to cross it just yet. Instead, continue heading north along the canal to catch a glimpse of the magnificent Ca’ d’Oro palace with its intricate façade.
While you're in the Rialto area, don’t miss the chance to visit the vibrant Rialto Market. This lively market is where locals shop for fresh produce and seafood daily. The colorful stalls are a feast for the eyes, and if you’re feeling peckish, now’s the perfect time to indulge in a traditional aperitivo. In Venice, this typically consists of a spritz or a glass of wine accompanied by small bites known as cicchetti. The Rialto area is renowned for its top-notch bacari (wine bars), making it an ideal spot to grab a quick snack.
- Al Mercà: Located at Fondamenta Riva Olio, 213, this quaint bar offers wine for €1-2, spritz for €3, and delicious sandwiches for just €1.50.
Teatro La Fenice
With your spirits high, your next destination is the magnificent Teatro La Fenice. To get there, follow the Grand Canal, soaking in the sight of gondolas and vaporetti gliding by, until you enter the charming streets of this area filled with old palaces and picturesque squares.
⭐ You can pre-purchase tickets without queuing here. And if you’re in the mood for a classic Venetian experience, consider taking a gondola ride!
Piazza San Marco
Next, make your way to the most iconic square in Venice: Piazza San Marco. Surrounded by architectural marvels like St. Mark’s Basilica, the Campanile, and the Doge’s Palace, this square is a hub of activity. As you admire the beauty of the basilica and the square, be mindful of the infamous pigeons (which may leave you with an unwelcome souvenir!).
⭐ If you wish to explore the monuments in detail, consider joining this complete tour that allows you to skip the lines. If you’re on a budget, simply enjoying the view is completely satisfying. Alternatively, you can opt to enter the Doge’s Palace, which grants access to four museums, including the Bridge of Sighs and the prisons.
Let’s press on to ensure you make the most of your day in Venice. A little effort now will lead to great rewards!
Midday adventures in Venice
Feeling tired? Keep your spirits up! There are still several noteworthy stops to make on your Venice itinerary. Let’s continue!
Bridge of Sighs
Just a short stroll from Piazza San Marco, you’ll find the Bridge of Sighs. This picturesque spot is not just famous for its beauty; it also has a haunting history. It was here that prisoners took their last glimpse of Venice before facing execution, hence the name.
Affordable dining in Venice
What’s that? Did someone say pasta? If you’re craving a delicious meal, head over to Dal Moro’s Fresh Pasta to Go. The name might be a mouthful, but the food is fantastic. You can select your preferred type of pasta and sauce—there’s a world beyond just bolognese—and enjoy your meal along the serene canals of Venice. Who needs a candlelit dinner when you can have fresh pasta by a canal?

Jewish Ghetto of Venice
Time is of the essence, and we want to utilize every minute. Your next stop is a hidden gem that many visitors overlook: the Jewish Ghetto. This historic area was the oldest ghetto in Europe and one of the most populous in the world. Strolling through its narrow streets, you’ll encounter a rich blend of Jewish culture and Venetian art, as well as kosher shops and restaurants and five synagogues.
Be sure to check out the Calletta Varisco, the narrowest street in Venice, measuring just 53 centimeters wide—watch out for getting stuck!
Take a moment to rest on one of the benches in Campo di Ghetto Nuovo to absorb the unique atmosphere of this unconventional part of the city. If time permits, treat yourself to a final culinary stop at Ciccheteria Venexiana da Luca e Fred nearby, where you can enjoy cicchetti and glasses of wine starting from €1.50-2.
From here, it’s a short walk to the beautiful Ponte delle Guglie, leading you back towards the train station. You might board your train feeling a little tipsy, but with your soul and stomach content!
