7 things to see and do in Carvoeiro Algarve

In the stunning region of the Algarve, lies a picturesque village that boasts a perfect blend of tranquility and vibrancy. Welcome to Carvoeiro, a charming destination characterized by its whitewashed houses adorned with vibrant colors and dramatic cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The soothing sound of waves sets the backdrop for what promises to be an unforgettable experience. Are you ready to discover some of the best things to see and do in Carvoeiro?
As soon as you park your car and start wandering through the narrow streets of Carvoeiro, you'll realize you've stumbled upon a hidden gem. Unlike many tourist spots that have succumbed to uncontrolled urbanization, Carvoeiro has retained its unique charm. The village remains small and intimate, free from towering hotels and fast-food chains, allowing you to savor the peaceful atmosphere of a traditional fishing village. It is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful villages in the Algarve.
Exploring the historic center of Carvoeiro
Your journey in Carvoeiro should begin with a stroll through its quaint streets. Head towards the Largo da Praia de Carvoeiro, and follow the Rua do Paraíso to the stunning Alto da Praia do Carvoeiro viewpoint. Along the way, be mesmerized by the breathtaking views and charming houses. Enhance your experience by stopping at one of the cozy cafés along the beach, where you can indulge in the simple pleasures that life offers.
⭐ While you're here, don’t forget to try some of the traditional dishes of the Algarve.
Relaxing at Carvoeiro Beach
It won't take long for you to discover one of Carvoeiro's main attractions: the Carvoeiro Beach. The soft golden sands framed by towering cliffs create a stunning setting. Don't resist the urge to dip your toes in the warm sand, and if conditions permit, take a refreshing swim in the clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
Walking the wooden boardwalk
One of the top activities in Carvoeiro is to explore the scenic boardwalk. This wooden pathway allows visitors to stroll effortlessly along the cliffs and rock formations that surround the village. The views from the boardwalk are nothing short of spectacular, making it a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts. The boardwalk begins next to the Forte de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação, where you can first stop at the viewpoint of the same name to admire the beach from a different angle.
Discovering the caves of Algar Seco
The boardwalk leads you to one of Carvoeiro's best-kept secrets: Algar Seco. This coastal park is filled with fascinating caves, arches, and rock formations that resemble an otherworldly landscape. The unique geological features of Algar Seco will leave you in awe as you explore its hidden corners.
Visiting the Alfazina Lighthouse
If you have a fascination for lighthouses (or as I like to call them, "lightkeepers"), make sure to visit the Alfazina Lighthouse. Located about 2 km east of Carvoeiro, this spot is one of the best places to catch a stunning sunset. Although we didn’t join the guided tour, I've heard they operate on Wednesdays from 2 PM to 5 PM.
Exploring Benagil Beach
Carvoeiro is surrounded by some of the best beaches in the Algarve, and it would be a shame to miss out on them. The most famous among them is undoubtedly Benagil Beach, known for its massive dome-shaped cave. While the beach is accessible by car, the cave itself can only be reached by boat. I highly recommend booking a boat tour that not only takes you to the caves but also visits other attractions such as Algar Seco and the Alfazina Lighthouse.

Enjoying Praia da Marinha
Another must-visit beach is Praia da Marinha, often regarded as one of the most iconic postcards of Portugal. Its unique rock formations and crystal-clear waters make it a natural wonder. You can reach this beach by car, but I also recommend joining a boat tour that includes stops at Algar Seco and Benagil Beach, culminating in a scenic cruise among the arches of Praia da Marinha.

Beyond the well-known attractions, Carvoeiro offers a variety of activities that cater to all tastes:
