7 top attractions and activities in Miravet

Nestled along the magnificent banks of the Ebro River and overshadowed by its impressive templar castle, Miravet stands out as one of the most enchanting villages to explore on a journey through the Terres de l’Ebre. If you're contemplating a visit and wish to uncover everything there is to see in Miravet, you're in for a delightful experience. We recently explored this gem, and we can't wait to share our highlights with you.
While Miravet may be small, it certainly isn’t short on charm or allure. It boasts one of Catalonia's most significant templar castles, and there are numerous surprises waiting within its ancient walls. So, let’s dive into all the wonders you can discover in Miravet.
Must-visit sites in Miravet
1. Castillo de Miravet
Dominating the landscape from its hilltop perch, the Castillo Templario de Miravet is the jewel of this village. For just 5€, you can wander through the ruins of this once-mighty fortress, a site that historically played a pivotal role in the area. The breathtaking views from the ramparts offer a unique perspective of the Ebro, as if the river itself is inviting you to embrace its timeless embrace.
During your visit, you can explore numerous features, including:
- Vigilance towers
- Ancient stables
- The arms courtyard
- The former church of the castle
Wondering how to reach the castle? You can drive there, but if you're up for a little adventure, a scenic 15-minute hike from the village will lead you up a somewhat steep path.
2. Iglesia Vieja de Miravet
The Iglesia Vieja stands proudly on the remnants of an ancient mosque, symbolizing the village's rich history. Despite suffering significant damage during the Battle of the Ebro and later during the Spanish Civil War, this church remains a testament to resilience.
Currently deconsecrated, the church serves as a venue for meetings, exhibitions, and events. Unfortunately, it was closed during our visit, making it a perfect excuse for a return trip to Miravet.
3. Views from the Dock (and a splash?)
The picturesque views from the small wooden dock floating on the Ebro are worth the trip alone. This is undoubtedly the best spot to appreciate the village's beauty and capture that iconic postcard image. And as the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words—take a look at ours!
But be warned, the dock also offers a tempting opportunity for a refreshing dip in Spain's longest river. While we played it safe, we witnessed a couple of brave souls shedding their clothes and leaping in from the dock, undoubtedly fulfilling a wild bet!
4. Strolling through the Village Streets
One of the most enjoyable activities in Miravet is a leisurely stroll through its historic center. A walk will take no more than 15-20 minutes, but it’s packed with sights that are sure to captivate you.
Along your walk, you'll come across:
- The old mill
- The shipyard (also known as the salted mill)
- Ancient entryways such as the Portal del Motxo
- Miradores (viewpoints), like the one at Sanaqueta
- Several pottery workshops, renowned in Miravet
Don't miss out on the Pitxell del Moixó, a traditional jug that represents the local ceramic craftsmanship.
5. Dining at Bar Amadeo
After all that exploring, refueling is essential. We chose the Bar Amadeo, a cozy spot with a terrace overlooking the river. Our strategy was to sample a bit of everything: patatas bravas, squid, olives, and the star of the show, their delightful croquettes. Trust me; you won't want to miss their unique cocido croquettes!
6. The Ferry Crossing: A Unique Experience
Did you know that one of the most interesting ways to reach Miravet is by ferry? Yes, you can cross the river on a wooden platform supported by two small boats. It accommodates only 2-3 cars at a time and operates without a motor, relying solely on the skill of the ferryman and the current of the river.
This ferry is the last operating river transbordador that connects the C-12 road with the village. The fare is quite reasonable: 3€ for cars, 2€ for motorcycles, and only 1€ for pedestrians.
7. Excursion to the Nearby Cathedral of Wine
Just 12 km from Miravet, in the village of Pinell de Brai, lies the Catedral del Vi, a modernist winery that is simply stunning. This place feels more like a grand cathedral made of bricks, tiles, and wine barrels than a traditional wine cellar.
We opted for a self-guided tour with an audio guide that we could listen to on our phones. The experience concluded with a tasting option—either one or four wines, depending on your preference. For more information, visit their official site here.
Exploring the Terres de l’Ebre
If you have a few days to spare and are looking for a rural getaway, consider dedicating 3-4 days to explore more of the southern region of Catalonia: the Terres de l’Ebre. From navigating the Delta del Ebro while enjoying a boat tour, birdwatching, discovering other charming villages, and indulging in a fantastic paella, there’s so much to experience.
For a luxurious touch, spend a night at Villa Retiro, where you can also enjoy a Michelin-starred dinner.
