Discovering Sorano: A Gem in the Hills
Our adventure began in Sorano, a picturesque village perched atop a rocky outcrop. The views from our hotel room were enchanting, but the thought of indulging in a breakfast of Nutella toast quickly coaxed us out of bed. After all, who could resist such a sweet temptation?
Before leaving, we made a stop at the San Rocco viewpoint for one last panoramic glimpse of the town, filled with memories and laughter as Rober took a tumble, a reminder that gravity has a sense of humor.
Exploring Sovana: Etruscan Heritage
Just a short drive from Sorano lies Sovana, known for its Etruscan heritage, particularly the Etruscan Necropolis. Although we decided to postpone this visit due to time constraints, it’s a must for history aficionados. The allure of ancient tombs is strong, but we opted to save our euros for more culinary delights along the way.
Relaxation at the Saturnia Hot Springs
Next up were the Saturnia Hot Springs, a natural oasis that beckoned us with its thermal waters. Unfortunately, time was not on our side, and we left with a longing to take a dip. If you’re camping enthusiast, consider pitching a tent nearby; it’s a fantastic spot to unwind and soak in the healing waters. Just remember to pack your swimsuit!
Through Maremma: The Enigmatic Devil’s Valley
As we made our way toward Volterra, we crossed the dramatic landscapes of the Maremma, which included the surreal Devil’s Valley. This geothermal area, highlighted by the famous Larderello, is home to impressive geothermal plants that produce about 10% of the world’s geothermal energy. The sight of enormous pipes snaking through the landscape was both curious and captivating.
Volterra: A Journey Through Time
Arriving in Volterra, we were struck by its historical significance as an ancient Etruscan capital. With nearly 3,000 years of history, the city offers visitors a delightful blend of culture and stunning vistas. Don’t miss:
- The vibrant Piazza dei Priori, echoing with history and architectural beauty.
- The majestic Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, a testament to medieval craftsmanship.
- The Baptistery of San Giovanni Battista, known for its intricate designs.
- The impressive Roman Theatre, which whispers tales of its storied past.
- The Etruscan Acropolis, where you can feel the ancient spirit of the city.
- Strolling through the charming streets, experiencing the essence of Volterra.
Plan to spend around two hours here; it’s an ideal stopover if you’re en route from San Gimignano or heading to Pisa.
Indulging in Tuscan Cuisine: Agriturismo Santa Vittoria
Our stomachs growled louder than ever, signaling it was time to indulge in a culinary experience at an agriturismo. These rustic eateries often serve dishes made from local, organic ingredients, and we chose Agriturismo Santa Vittoria, nestled in a beautiful setting just outside Volterra. We feasted on delightful mixed Tuscan crostini, a hearty grilled meat platter, and divine pappardelle with wild boar that was simply unforgettable. All this for about 30€ total!
It’s worth noting that while the photos may suggest small portions, the meals, especially the pappardelle, were generous and satisfying.
Pisa: The Final Destination
With our appetites satisfied, we set our sights on Pisa, the final stop of our journey. Our previous adventures in this iconic city have been well documented, so we won't repeat ourselves here, but it’s a destination that never fails to impress.
