Exploring the Unique Charm of Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is a city steeped in history and beauty, but not all areas provide the same experience. Whether you want to sleep within medieval walls, enjoy breakfast overlooking the Adriatic Sea, or stroll to the beach in flip-flops, different neighborhoods cater to diverse needs.

Here’s a look at the most recommended areas for finding accommodation in Dubrovnik.

1. Old Town: Heart of Dubrovnik

Staying in the heart of Dubrovnik is an experience like no other. With its cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and vibrant atmosphere, Old Town offers everything right at your doorstep. However, be prepared for steep prices and lots of stairs!

  • Pros: You’ll be in the center of the action, ideal for first-time visitors who want to make the most of their time.
  • Cons: It’s the most expensive area, difficult to access by car, and can be quite noisy.

Recommended Hotels: Kenova Apartments, Private Accommodation Linda.

2. Ploče: The Scenic Overlook

Just east of the Old Town, Ploče offers some of the best views of Dubrovnik. This area features elegant hotels and serene surroundings, making it a desirable choice for those wanting to escape the crowds after a day of sightseeing.

  • Pros: Stunning sea and city views, quieter than the Old Town, and just a 10-minute walk away.
  • Cons: Many stairs to navigate, and prices are not significantly lower than the center.

Recommended Hotels: Love Dubrovnik Hostel, A bright hideaway.

3. Lapad: Beachside Bliss

Lapad is perfect for travelers seeking a balance between relaxation and accessibility. With its charming promenade, beaches, restaurants, and shops, you can enjoy a peaceful atmosphere while still being close to the city center, just 15-20 minutes away by bus or Uber.

  • Pros: Ideal for those wanting a beach vibe and a relaxed atmosphere, offering spacious accommodations at reasonable prices.
  • Cons: Further from the historical center and lacks the same charm.

Recommended Hotels: Hotel Splendid, Hotel Uvala.

4. Gruž: Authentic Experience for Backpackers

Gruž is an authentic neighborhood a bit further from the center but well-connected by bus. It’s home to the main bus station and local markets, making it a convenient choice for budget travelers. We personally enjoyed staying at GH Maria, where we felt right at home.

  • Pros: Affordable rates, genuine local atmosphere, beautiful views, and convenient transport to the center.
  • Cons: Lack of historic charm and limited dining options nearby.

Recommended Hotel: GH Maria.

5. Babin Kuk: Resort Paradise

Babin Kuk, located north of Lapad, is known for its large hotels and resorts, making it ideal for travelers looking to unwind completely. While it may lack local ambiance, it offers luxurious amenities like pools and spas.

  • Pros: Comprehensive amenities, peaceful environment, and direct beach access.
  • Cons: Highly tourist-oriented, less authentic, and more isolated.

Recommended Hotels: Apartment Mara, Villa Katarina Dubrovnik.

Budget Accommodation in Dubrovnik: Our Personal Experience

If you’re wondering where to stay in Dubrovnik, we found a cozy, budget-friendly option that exceeded our expectations. We stayed at Guesthouse Maria, which may not have the luxury of a five-star hotel, but it offered the warmth of a family atmosphere. Coincidentally, we arrived on the day of the youngest family member's birthday and were invited to join the celebration!

This guesthouse serves as a homestay, a simple yet delightful choice in the city. Families often open their homes to travelers, ensuring a welcoming experience. Maria, the matriarch, and her daughter Marianna made us feel right at home, assisting with any inquiries we had.

The house is well-maintained, with clean rooms and a spacious shared bathroom. Amenities like air conditioning and Wi-Fi are included, along with a common area featuring a kitchen and dining space to help you save on meals during your stay.

What we loved most were the stunning views from our room. Guesthouse Maria has three rooms, and we were lucky enough to stay in one overlooking the bay and the new harbor. The terrace was a highlight, where we enjoyed delicious tortellini with cream and cevapcici while watching breathtaking sunsets.

We highly recommend this guesthouse for those seeking cheap accommodation in Dubrovnik. While the location isn’t the most central, it provides a genuine experience away from the tourist traps.

  • Location: Ul. Andrije Hebranga 90, near a bus stop. You can take a bus to the center or enjoy a 25-30 minute walk. We recommend walking down and taking the bus back up.
  • Extra: There are similar accommodations nearby that offer rooms for short stays. We also met the owner of Apartments Tony, who offers complete apartments or room rentals.

We hope this guide helps you navigate the options for where to stay in Dubrovnik, saving you some headaches (and endless searches on Booking). From charming homes in the Old Town to resorts and simple, cozy rooms in Gruž, there’s something for everyone.
