Exploring the Historical Madrasas of Fez

Fez is home to some of Morocco's most stunning madrasas, or Islamic schools, which are open to visitors. Not only are they architectural wonders, but they also provide insight into the country's rich educational and cultural heritage.

1. Madrasa Bou Inania

While it may not have the same fame as its counterpart in Marrakech, the Madrasa Bou Inania is a must-visit. This architectural marvel showcases intricate tile work and carvings. You can explore the common rooms and study areas, making it a captivating experience for any visitor. The entrance fee is 20 MAD.

2. Madrasa Al Attarine

Another stunning madrasa is the Madrasa Al Attarine, renowned for its beautiful interior courtyard and exquisite cedar wood dome. Unlike Bou Inania, visitors can access the upper levels and enjoy panoramic views over the city. This is undoubtedly one of the highlights of Fez! Entry is also 20 MAD. Other notable madrasas include Madrasa Cherratine (20 MAD) and Madrasa Seffarine (50 MAD).

3. University and Mosque of Qarawiyyin

Adjacent to the Al Attarine is the University and Mosque of Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 AD and recognized by UNESCO as the oldest existing university in the world. While non-Muslims are not permitted inside, you can admire its stunning architecture from the outside. Strolling around its walls offers glimpses of its grandeur, making it a worthwhile stop.

Experiencing the Tannery District

The Chouwara Tannery is one of Fez's most iconic sites, where traditional methods of leather processing are still employed today. The vibrant colors of the dye pits create a captivating scene, best viewed from one of the nearby terrace shops.

4. Chouwara Tannery

Visitors should be prepared for the strong smell, as animal skins are treated with a mixture of pigeon droppings, cow urine, and saltwater before being dyed. Fortunately, local vendors offer mint sprigs to help mask the odor. It’s completely free to observe, but you might find yourself tempted to purchase leather goods!

The Majestic Gates of Fez

One of the most photographed landmarks in Fez is Bab Boujloud, also known as the Blue Gate. This impressive entrance to the medina is adorned with striking blue tiles and is a great spot for photos.

5. Bab Boujloud

Don’t forget to enjoy a cup of mint tea at the nearby plaza before heading through the gate. For a fantastic view, climb to the rooftop of a café nearby, like Café Bouanania, to take in the sights.

Wandering Through the Medina

The Medina of Fez, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a labyrinth of over 9,000 narrow streets. It’s split into two sections: Fes el Bali (the older part) and Fes el Jdid (the newer expansion).

6. Medina of Fez

Getting lost is almost inevitable, so using a map app like Maps.me can be a lifesaver. Keep an eye on the two main streets, Rue Talaa Kedira and Rue Talaa Sghira, which can help orient you. If you need assistance from locals, a small tip is customary.

Discovering Cultural Highlights

Fez is not just about historical sites; it’s also a hub of traditional crafts and arts.

7. Nejjarine Museum

The Nejjarine Museum features an impressive collection of Moroccan art and craftsmanship. The museum itself is a beautiful building, and its terrace offers a peaceful spot to enjoy a cup of tea amidst the bustling city.
