Our journey through New Zealand's North Island

Embarking on a journey to New Zealand's North Island is not just about sightseeing; it's about immersing yourself in the rich tapestry of cultures, landscapes, and experiences this incredible region has to offer. From the bustling streets of Auckland to the serene beaches of the Bay of Islands, every corner reveals a new adventure waiting to be explored.
Our adventure began in Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand and often considered the gateway to this spectacular country. With its vibrant atmosphere and diverse population, Auckland was the perfect starting point for our exploration of the North Island. We settled here for three weeks to take an English course, a decision that opened the door to friendships with fellow travelers from around the globe.
Discovering the North Island
After our educational stint, we were eager to dive into the natural wonders of New Zealand. The North Island is a treasure trove of breathtaking landscapes, and we rented a small van to traverse its winding roads. Our journey took us from the charming beaches to the rugged mountains, with each stop offering a glimpse into the unique Maori culture that enriches the island.
Some highlights of our trip included:
- Visiting the stunning Tutukaka Coast, renowned for its pristine beaches and marine life.
- Exploring Whangarei and the picturesque Bay of Islands, known for its beautiful harbors and historical significance.
- Reaching the northernmost point, Cape Reinga, where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean, a sacred place for the Maori.
We traveled approximately 5,000 kilometers over three weeks, sleeping in our van each night, which allowed us to embrace the freedom of the road while connecting with nature.
Unique Travel Experiences
After a few months of exploring the North Island, we decided to experience a different aspect of traveling – house sitting. This concept involves taking care of someone else's home (and sometimes their pets) while they are away. We had the pleasure of house-sitting in several beautiful locations, including Waihi and the Coromandel Peninsula, which allowed us to live like locals and enjoy the comforts of home.
During this time, we encountered delightful characters like Pedro and Mosca, Rossie and Gogo, as well as a handful of quirky sheep! These experiences provided us with a unique insight into Kiwi life and allowed us to enjoy the tranquil rural lifestyle.
Exploring Central and Southern North Island
Our journey continued southward, culminating in the vibrant capital city of Wellington. Along the way, we visited some of the most stunning attractions in New Zealand:
- The geothermally active park of Wai-O-Tapu near Rotorua, famous for its colorful lakes and bubbling mud pools.
- Lago Taupo, the largest lake in New Zealand, offering stunning views and outdoor activities.
- The whimsical Hobbiton, a movie set that transports you into the heart of Middle-earth.
- The breathtaking Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a challenging trek that showcases the island's volcanic landscape.
Overall, our six-month adventure was a blend of tranquility and excitement. We managed to write three books while seeing some of the most beautiful sights New Zealand has to offer.
