Understanding the Alpujarra Granadina

The Alpujarra was the last stronghold of the Moors in Spain, where the final remnants of the Muslim population sought refuge in its rugged mountains during the Reconquista. This historical significance is palpable in the air as you wander through its winding streets. Notably, Boabdil, the last Sultan of Granada, attempted to escape here, marking the region as a poignant reminder of Spain's complex past.

Today, the legacy of the moorish architecture is evident in the white villages that cling to the mountainsides, each showcasing a unique layout reminiscent of ancient Arab medinas. These towns are not only picturesque but are also characterized by distinct architectural features like flat roofs, wooden awnings, and charming chimneys.

Exploring Pampaneira

Pampaneira is often referred to as one of the most beautiful villages in the Alpujarra and even in all of Andalusia. Strolling through its cobbled streets, you can meander beneath traditional awnings and discover legendary spots like the Fuente de San Antonio, where locals joke that drinking from it will lead to marriage!

This village is a haven for artisans and those who appreciate simplicity in life. It serves as a wonderful gateway to the rest of Alpujarra Granadina, filled with local crafts and gastronomic delights, making it a perfect starting point for your adventures.

Ascending to Capileira

Located at the base of the Mulhacén and Veleta peaks, Capileira is the highest village in the Poqueira valley, standing at over 1,400 meters above sea level. This charming village was our chosen base for exploring Alpujarra Granadina, and its peaceful ambiance, stunning views, and numerous attractions, including the Church of Santa María de la Cabeza and the Plaza del Calvario, captivated us.

Capileira offers many hiking opportunities, making it an excellent choice for nature lovers. It’s a memory we cherish, especially our first post-lockdown trip, where we enjoyed the tranquil streets accompanied by local cats and, of course, delicious breakfasts featuring Trévelez ham.

Discovering Bubión

Bubión, the third village in the Poqueira valley, is equally stunning and competes fiercely in beauty with its counterparts. As you wander its narrow streets, you’ll feel the history of the Arab presence come alive, with its white houses, labyrinthine alleys, and a unique atmosphere.

This village appears to defy time, dangling precariously from the Sierra Nevada peaks, adorned with flower pots that outnumber its residents. The journey to the Church of the Virgen del Rosario, where the spirit of the Mora Zecilia is said to reside, is not to be missed.

Soportújar: The Enchanted Village

Soportújar is known as “the village of witches,” and it’s easy to see why. As you explore, you’ll encounter enchanting details like caves where witches are said to concoct magic potions and lively squares that host mystical gatherings. The atmosphere is filled with mystery—think dragon fountains, witch hats, and secret corners waiting to be discovered.

If you visit in August, you might get to experience the Feria del Embrujo, a festival celebrating the folklore of witches and sorcerers who once gathered in this magical place.

Relaxing at the Balneario de Lanjarón

Lanjarón, the gateway to Alpujarra Granadina, is renowned as the water village, famous for its mineral-rich thermal springs. What better way to spend a day than indulging in its relaxing thermal baths? The village itself is worth a visit, with its historical buildings, lively squares, and charming local bars where you can enjoy some regional dishes.

It’s also one of the most lively towns in the area, making it a great stop on your journey.

Embark on a Hiking Adventure

With Sierra Nevada towering nearby, the Alpujarra offers fantastic hiking opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. Several peaks exceed 3,000 meters, with Mulhacén being the highest at 3,479 meters. Here’s a list of recommended hiking routes:

  • Route of the Barranco de Poqueira: A circular trek of about 10 km connecting Pampaneira, Bubión, and Capileira.
  • La Cebadilla: Starting in Capileira, this trail leads you through the Poqueira valley for around 8 km.
  • Cañada de las Siete Lagunas: A stunning trek that starts in Trévelez, totaling about 10 km to the breathtaking seven lakes.
  • Sendero de las acequias: A circular route departing and returning to Mecina Bombarón.

Whether you seek a multi-day adventure or a short scenic walk, the options are plentiful.

Savoring Gastronomic Delights in Trévelez

Trévelez is renowned for its jamón, one of Spain’s three Protected Designations of Origin. The high altitude of this village creates the perfect climate for curing ham, making it a culinary treasure that you must try. Besides tasting local delicacies, a quick stroll through the picturesque village is well worth your time.

Don't leave without trying the plato alpujarreño, a hearty dish featuring Trévelez ham, fried eggs, potatoes, and local sausages—a true feast for the senses!

Sampling Natural Sparkling Water at Fuente Agria

At the picturesque Fuente Agria, you can taste naturally carbonated water from a spring. This fountain, located near the small Hermitage of the Virgen de las Angustias, has five spouts, each offering different types of water, including one that’s rich in iron. The surrounding area features a charming picnic spot where you can unwind amidst nature.

A short walk leads you to el Chorrerón, a striking waterfall with reddish waters, thanks to its iron content—an enchanting sight you won't want to miss!

Staying Overnight in Alpujarra

We highly recommend spending at least one night in Alpujarra. While a day trip is possible, it limits your ability to experience the charms of the region fully. Ideally, plan for a stay of 2 to 3 days to explore various areas at a leisurely pace. The nights bring a serene atmosphere as visitors tend to leave, allowing you to soak in the authentic essence of Alpujarra.

We personally stayed at the Hotel Rural Alfajía de Antonio in Capileira, enjoying a lovely terrace view where we savored a drink at sunset.
