Visit Rottnest Island, Home of the Quokkas in Australia

Imagine a place where the sun kisses the turquoise waters and a furry little creature known for its perpetual smile greets you at every turn. Welcome to Rottnest Island, a gem of Australia that beckons travelers with its stunning landscapes and unique wildlife. If you’re considering a visit, prepare for an unforgettable adventure that combines natural beauty and delightful encounters with quokkas, the happiest animals on the planet.
Our adventure on Rottnest Island
Our excitement to explore Rottnest Island was palpable, even before stepping foot on the ferry. We chose the earliest departure to maximize our time, and although the early start felt daunting, we were soon thrilled by our decision. Arriving at The Basin, one of the island's most famous beaches, around 8:30 AM revealed a serene paradise devoid of crowds. The crystal-clear water was inviting, making it the perfect spot for our first swim of the day.
After refreshing ourselves with a dip in the chilly water—a reminder of being on an island far removed from the mainland—we encountered our first quokka, a round, furry bundle of joy hiding beneath a tree. The sheer delight of seeing this adorable marsupial was unforgettable. We hopped on our red bicycles and set off to discover more of the island.
As we cycled back from The Basin, we encountered a surprise visitor: a black snake crossing the road. With cautious curiosity, we snapped a photo from a safe distance, later discovering it was a dugite snake, known for its venomous bite. That was just the beginning of our wildlife encounters.
Throughout the day, we were treated to stunning views of secluded beaches reminiscent of the Balearic Islands, yet the native vegetation and wildlife reminded us we were indeed in Australia. At one of these tranquil spots, we spotted a massive pelican with piercing yellow eyes, ever-watchful of its surroundings. We continued to pedal past salt lakes and rolling hills, with the sun beating down on us, making the journey both challenging and exhilarating.
Quokkas are not just adorable; they are downright photogenic! These little marsupials have a reputation for being the happiest creatures on Earth, often appearing to smile. They have a knack for posing whenever a camera is drawn, turning every visitor into an amateur wildlife photographer. However, a crucial reminder: please do not feed these creatures or any wildlife. Responsible tourism means respecting their natural behavior and ensuring their health and safety.
One of the highlights of our day was the route from Henrietta Rocks to Parker Point on the southeast side of the island. This area, with its vibrant colors and pristine landscapes, left us in awe. It was a reminder that nature's beauty is often found off the beaten path.

We opted for Rottnest Express, but there are combination packages available that include ferry and bike rentals—ideal for those who prefer a hassle-free experience. The ferry ride is relatively short, taking about 45 minutes from Fremantle and approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes from Perth, making it an efficient and comfortable journey.

From Perth, fares start at 99 AUD and can reach 105 AUD, including entry. Ensure to check for any seasonal variations or additional fees.
What to bring to Rottnest Island
To ensure a perfect day on Rottnest Island, don’t forget to pack the essentials:
- Swimsuit: With numerous beautiful beaches to choose from, wearing your swimsuit under your clothes and packing a spare is wise.
- Sunscreen: The Australian sun can be harsh, so reapply regularly to protect your skin.
- Hat: A wide-brimmed hat is ideal for keeping the sun off your face when you're not cycling.
- Food: While there are supermarkets and restaurants in the settlement, bringing your own snacks or a picnic can enhance your experience. Simple sandwiches and fruit work well.
- Water: Hydration is key. Bring at least 1.5 liters of water per person, as potable water sources are limited.
- Snorkeling gear: If you enjoy snorkeling, bring your own equipment to explore the island’s underwater beauty.
- Extras: Don’t forget your towel, sunglasses, power bank, and a selfie stick for those memorable quokka photos.
Getting around the island
The best way to explore Rottnest Island is by renting a bicycle. If you don’t have one included in your package, you can easily rent one at the settlement. Remember, wearing a helmet is mandatory in Western Australia, including the island.
The island boasts a 25 km cycling loop, which can take between 3 to 5 hours to complete. For the best experience, cycle in a clockwise direction to take advantage of the wind at your back.
For those who prefer not to pedal, a bus service circulates the island, allowing unlimited travel for 20 AUD. Buses stop at most key attractions, although some may still require a short walk from the nearest stop.
Recommended bike routes
There are three popular cycling routes to choose from:
- Blue Route: This 4 km loop explores the northeast, leading to The Basin and returning via the lakes.
- Green Route: A 10 km journey through the southeast, featuring Parker Point, before crossing the island back to the settlement.
- Red Route: The complete island loop, excluding the West End, offers a scenic 22 km ride.
We started with the Blue Route, enjoying The Basin nearly to ourselves at sunrise. After a refreshing swim, we returned to the settlement before embarking on the full island tour, spending around 7 hours enjoying the sights and sounds of this stunning destination.
Best snorkeling spots
For snorkel enthusiasts, here are the top locations to dive in:
- Parker Point and Little Salmon Bay (south): Both offer protected waters with excellent snorkeling opportunities, best visited in the morning.
- Little Armstrong Bay, Parakeet Bay, and The Basin (north): These spots are also great for snorkeling, ideal for afternoon visits.

Where to see quokkas
Quokkas are abundant throughout Rottnest Island, with an estimated population of 10,000 to 12,000. While they can sometimes be elusive, keep an eye out along the roadsides, especially in shaded areas under trees. If you see a group of people gathered, chances are there's a quokka nearby.
Our first sighting happened on the way to The Basin, where some quokkas were nestled in the trees right after leaving the settlement. By the afternoon, we spotted several in the Basin parking lot, charming visitors for food, and later on the road to Kingstown Barracks and Parker Point.
Can you sleep on Rottnest Island?
For those wanting to extend their stay, Rottnest Island offers various accommodations, from simple campgrounds to cozy bungalows and hotels. Many lodging options are located near the settlement and the northeastern part of the island, such as Geordie Bay.
