The Best Beaches and Coves of Cabo de Gata
It's important to note that all these beaches and coves are pristine, meaning you won't find beach bars or many services nearby. Be sure to bring everything you need for a perfect day, and please remember to take your trash with you when you leave.
Moreover, Almería is known for its winds, particularly the legendary Levante. While the beaches are stunning, if you visit on a windy day, you may not enjoy them as much.
1. Playa de los Muertos: The Most Beautiful Beach in Cabo de Gata
Despite its name, which might raise a few eyebrows, Playa de los Muertos is a breathtaking beach that consistently ranks among the most beautiful beaches in Spain. The name originates from the unfortunate shipwrecks that occurred in the area, where lifeless bodies would wash ashore.
To reach this stunning spot, you need to hike a 15-minute trail, so sturdy shoes are recommended. The path starts from a parking area (costing €5 for the day in summer) and leads you to the first part of the beach, which is pebbly with crystal-clear waters.
Don't forget your snorkeling gear! The water is so clear that you'll see plenty of fish, especially near the right side of the beach where the rocks are. This area has calmer currents and is great for families, though it's also where you'll find the most people.
Before heading back, make sure to visit the viewpoint along the trail for unforgettable vistas of this paradise. For us, Playa de los Muertos is undoubtedly the most beautiful beach in Cabo de Gata—don't miss it!
2. Cala de Enmedio
Cala de Enmedio is a small yet stunning cove, about 200 meters long, often considered the most beautiful cove in Almería. If you want to escape the crowds and don't mind a bit of a hike, this is your best bet.
Its charm lies in its seclusion, nestled in a bay surrounded by towering white rock walls. The beach features fine sand and remarkably clear water. If you're feeling adventurous, explore the fossilized dunes at each end, where the rock formations create beautiful pools of clear water.
Access to Cala de Enmedio is not direct by car; you can either hike from the village of Agua Amarga or from the parking lot at Cala del Plomo (about 2 km or a 30-minute walk), or even kayak for the more adventurous souls.
3. Cala del Plomo
This small cove is popular among locals, especially during the summer months. If you plan to visit in peak season, an early start is advisable. However, outside of summer, you can enjoy this beautiful location almost entirely to yourself. The water is typically calm, making it an excellent spot for snorkeling, especially on tranquil days.
Getting here is not the easiest, as the unpaved road requires a bit of patience—it's about 8 km to the parking area from the main road, and it might take you over half an hour to get there. Yet, the reward is one of the best beaches in Cabo de Gata.
4. Cala de San Pedro
Cala de San Pedro offers a distinct hippie vibe, attracting visitors looking for a unique experience. With its turquoise waters and a laid-back atmosphere, it’s not uncommon to find some visitors practicing nudism in this area, though it's not officially designated as a nudist beach.
You can reach this cove by parking about 2 km from the village of Las Negras and walking the remaining distance, or by taking a boat that operates seasonally from the beach of Las Negras (12€ round trip).
5. El Playazo de Rodalquilar: A Must-Visit Beach in Cabo de Gata
Located just 3 km from the mining village of Rodalquilar, this beach is another must-see spot in Cabo de Gata. With its fine sand and tranquil waters, it’s perfect for families looking for a safe and beautiful place to relax.
On one end of the beach, you'll find the Castillo de San Ramón, a defensive fortress built to protect against pirate attacks, which blends seamlessly into the golden landscape. Interestingly, it was bought for just 1,500 pesetas back in 1875, and its current owners are selling it for a whopping three million euros. Don’t miss the little cove at the foot of the castle, though it can get crowded!
This beach is ideal for putting on some water shoes and exploring the surrounding rock formations. There’s a nearby parking area, but it fills up quickly in summer, so arrive early if you want a spot.
6. La Isleta del Moro
This charming village holds a special place in our hearts. Be sure to take a dip at the Playa del Peñón Blanco. While the beach may not be as renowned as others, it offers a picturesque view of the village and its famous rock formation. The name 'Isleta del Moro' references the pirates who once roamed these coastal waters. From the parking area, the views are fantastic.
In the village, you'll find several excellent restaurants that serve local specialties and fresh seafood. Don’t forget to visit the viewpoint at one end of the village for stunning views of the Los Frailes volcano.
7. Playa de los Genoveses
This is one of the best-known and largest beaches in Cabo de Gata, offering a family-friendly and laid-back atmosphere. The fine sand and crystal-clear waters make it an ideal choice for families, as the water remains shallow for quite a distance.
The name 'Los Genoveses' pays homage to the Genoese fleet that fought alongside Alfonso VII against the Moors in 1147. On the beach's right side, you can see the “Morrón de los Genoveses,” a volcanic promontory overlooking the sea, while the other side features remnants of a Civil War bunker.
Access is easy via a less than 1 km trail from the village of San José or by driving to a public parking area (which has limited spaces and incurs a fee during the high season). Alternatively, a public bus runs from San José to Playa de los Genoveses for just 1€ per trip. More bus information here.
Interestingly, this beach has served as a filming location for several movies, including Lawrence of Arabia, solidifying its status as one of the most beautiful beaches in Cabo de Gata.
8. Playa de Mónsul: Another Top Beach in Cabo de Gata
Playa de Mónsul is a classic favorite among Cabo de Gata visitors. Located next to Playa de los Genoveses, it features a huge rock formation known as the Peineta de Mónsul, which has attracted the attention of many filmmakers. It's appeared in various movies and commercials, including Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade!
The beach showcases the stunning volcanic landscape, with dark, wind-eroded rocks shaped by the Mediterranean. The dune area extends to Playa de Mónsul, and behind it, you can explore a large dune known as the Gran Duna de Mónsul, offering fantastic views of the beach and coastline.
Like Playa de los Genoveses, there is a public parking area (fee applies in summer, €5 for the day) that fills up quickly, so arrive early if driving. Alternatively, you can take the public bus from San José (1€) or prepare for a long walk!
