Exploring Tangalle: A Guide to Pijando
After an exhilarating adventure filled with wildlife in Yala, we set off to explore the stunning beaches of Sri Lanka. Having previously visited Nilaveli on the east coast, we were eager to uncover the hidden gems of the south coast, starting with Tangalle.
Discovering the Natural Wonders of Tangalle
Tangalle is not only renowned for its picturesque coastline but also for the incredible turtle nesting sites. Specifically, the Rekawa Beach area attracts these magnificent creatures during the night as they come ashore to lay their eggs. Unfortunately, the increasing presence of tourism has made it necessary to pay an entrance fee of 1,000 rupees to witness this natural spectacle. Instead of venturing out, we found solace in our accommodation at Good Karma, a peaceful haven in its own right.
During our stay, we decided to rent a motorcycle to explore the surrounding areas. One of our first stops was the impressive Wewrukannala Temple, featuring a towering 50-meter Buddha statue alongside various depictions of demons and other Buddhas. The temple's unique architecture and spiritual ambiance were captivating, offering a glimpse into the local culture.
Local Gastronomy and Culinary Adventures
Our explorations led us to a charming cove with a delightful local restaurant. This hidden gem, located just beyond Tangalle, boasted a stunning view and an inviting atmosphere. Although we didn’t dine there, it was a perfect place to soak in the surroundings. Eventually, we found another local eatery where we indulged in a traditional buffet, filled with spicy vegetables and freshly caught fish. The meal was topped off with a delightful surprise: a bottle of honey, which we mistook for brandy, intended to accompany the yogurt dessert. It was a sweet discovery that added to the culinary experience!
Continuing our adventure, we ventured to the famous Blow Hole, a natural wonder where the sea water bursts through the rocks like a geyser on rough tide days. Sadly, we encountered a swarm of local vendors, and after a brief glance, we decided to make a hasty retreat, realizing that the entrance fee of 350 rupees wasn’t worth the chaos. Instead, we found a peaceful local beach where we met a friendly local named Nilanka, who generously gifted us some special local tea leaves. Although they didn’t have a noticeable effect when mixed with regular tea, it was a thoughtful gesture that highlighted the warmth of the local community.
Relaxation and Leisure Activities
Our days in Tangalle were filled with relaxation as we enjoyed the pristine beaches, dotted with palm trees and endless stretches of golden sand. We engaged in playful matches of beach volleyball, albeit without a net, and took refreshing dips in the ocean, even though the strong currents kept us cautious. These moments of leisure were made even more enjoyable with our access to a small pool at our accommodation, where we savored fresh coconuts and basked in the sun's warmth.
However, we did encounter a nuisance in the form of sandflies, which left us with itchy reminders of our beach escapades. Little did we know that we’d be scratching away at those bites for days to come!
Practical Information for Travelers
How to get to Tangalle?
Our journey began in Tissa, where we hopped on a local bus to Tangalle. The ride took just over two hours and cost us a mere 103 rupees per person. Upon arrival, we took a tuk-tuk to our hotel, located a bit beyond Rekawa Beach, which cost around 450 rupees. Given the somewhat secluded nature of the area, it’s wise to keep a local tuk-tuk driver’s number handy for transportation needs, although we did spot a local bus passing by during our stay.

We were fortunate to stay at Good Karma, which provided a luxurious and relaxing environment, allowing us to unwind after our daily explorations. The serene atmosphere and convenient amenities made it a perfect base for our adventures.
Getting around Tangalle
Renting a motorcycle proved to be an excellent choice for exploring the surrounding beaches. The nearby beaches just a few kilometers from Tangalle, heading towards Matara, were particularly breathtaking. We rented the bike directly from our hotel for about 1,000 rupees a day, which gave us the freedom to discover the area at our own pace.
Exploring Beyond Tangalle
While Tangalle offers plenty to do, there are numerous attractions in the surrounding areas worth exploring. A drive along the southern coast will lead you to stunning beaches like Unawatuna and Mirissa, both famous for their beauty and vibrant local scenes.

Our time in Tangalle was nothing short of magical.
