How to Get to Florence

The most economical way to reach Florence from Spain is to fly into the Pisa Airport. Once you land, you have a couple of options to get to Florence: you can either take a train or a bus. If you choose the train, it’s a quick journey of about an hour to the Santa Maria Novella station in Florence, making it a convenient option. For train schedules and fares, visit Trenitalia. We recommend taking the regional express train, which starts at just €9.

Alternatively, if you prefer to head directly to Florence, you can catch the bus that departs from right outside the airport to Piazzale Montelungo, located conveniently near the train station. More details are available at Airport Bus Express.

Another option is to fly into Bologna. From Bologna Airport, there are bus services that connect you directly to Florence!

Top Attractions to See in Florence

Florence may be a compact city, but it offers an abundance of sights and activities that deserve careful planning to maximize your visit. Among the top attractions are:

  • The iconic Duomo di Firenze, with its breathtaking dome designed by Brunelleschi.
  • The Ponte Vecchio, renowned for its picturesque views and charming shops.
  • The world-famous Uffizi Gallery, housing priceless works of art from the Renaissance period.
  • The Accademia Gallery, home to Michelangelo's original statue of David.

To avoid long queues, particularly in high season, it’s advisable to purchase tickets for the Uffizi Gallery in advance. Prices range from €12 in the off-peak season to €20 during peak times. You can reserve your tickets online here (note: there is a €4 reservation fee).

If your goal is to see the original David by Michelangelo, remember that the statue resides in the Galleria dell’Accademia. Again, booking in advance is recommended during busy periods. Secure your timed entry here, with a similar reservation fee.

If you want to cover both the Uffizi and the Accademia Galleries

Consider booking a guided tour in Spanish that includes visits to both museums as well as a walking tour through the historic center of Florence. This option provides you with priority access and insightful commentary from a Spanish-speaking guide. You can find more information and book your tour here.

Day Trips and Tours from Florence

If you have ample time to explore not only Florence but also its stunning surroundings, consider dedicating a day to one or more day trips from Florence. Destinations such as Siena, San Gimignano, and the picturesque Cinque Terre are all within reach. However, we advise this only if you’re spending at least two full days in Florence to avoid sacrificing time that could be spent exploring the city itself.

In addition, look into the best free tours in Florence available in Spanish. These tours offer a fantastic way to learn about the city’s rich history and hidden gems, guided by knowledgeable professionals.

Don’t forget to carry your Revolut card and/or the N26 card to avoid international transaction fees when withdrawing money or making purchases abroad.

Dining and Restaurants in Florence

When it comes to dining, be cautious about eating on the street. Recently, Florence has implemented fines of €500 for tourists caught dining in four specific areas: Via de’Neri, Piazzale degli Uffizi, Piazza del Grano, and Via della Ninna. The reason behind this is to curb street dining in these popular tourist spots. While you can still eat on the street, it’s best to avoid these locations.

For great local cuisine at reasonable prices, explore some delightful eateries. Don’t miss the chance to try local delicacies from Tuscany, and for the adventurous, sample a panino col lampredotto, a traditional sandwich made with cow stomach! We had one at the Mercato Centrale, and it was quite an experience (though it was a bit of an acquired taste for some). Check out this list of affordable restaurants to get more ideas.

Best Time to Visit Florence

So, what is the best time to visit Florence? We would recommend avoiding the summer months, particularly July and August, when the city is inundated with tourists. Instead, consider visiting in either spring or autumn when the weather is delightful, and the crowds are more manageable.

Where to Stay in Florence

Choosing the right accommodation is vital for a pleasant stay in Florence. We found a cozy apartment in the heart of the city, which was a delightful experience. Staying centrally allows you to explore the city on foot easily, and with a bit of luck, you might snag some fantastic deals. Check here for good offers. A convenient area is Santa Maria Novella, which is close to the train station.

Best Views of Florence

For the most stunning panoramic views of Florence, head to Piazzale Michelangelo. We suggest taking bus number 13 from Piazza del Duomo or buses 12/13 from Santa Maria Novella. The return trip can be done on foot, allowing you to pass through beautiful gardens and quaint streets.

If it’s too crowded at Piazzale Michelangelo, there’s a hidden gem just behind it: the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte. The views from here are nearly as breathtaking, but you’ll encounter far fewer tourists.

Should You Rent a Car in Florence?

Renting a car in Florence is generally not advisable if your focus is solely on the city. Florence is quite walkable, and if you feel a bit lazy, public buses are an efficient and affordable option. However, if you’re planning to explore the beautiful Tuscan countryside as well, it’s a good idea to rent a car, keeping in mind parking regulations. Florence has many limited traffic zones (ZTL), so be cautious and consider parking options in areas extending from the station to Scandicci.

Renting a Car to Explore Tuscany

If you have several days to spare, we highly recommend renting a car to dedicate at least one day to exploring Tuscany. A scenic road trip through the Chianti region, known for its rolling hills, vineyards, and medieval towns, is a must. Be sure to visit San Gimignano, often referred to as the Medieval Manhattan due to its tower structures. Staying overnight is highly recommended to fully soak in the experience.

Additional Tips for Traveling to Florence

  • Dress appropriately when visiting religious sites in Florence, as modest attire is required. In the summer, consider carrying a scarf to cover your shoulders when entering churches.
  • Don’t miss exploring the trendy San Frediano neighborhood, located just across the Arno River. It has been named one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world by Lonely Planet, and for good reason!
  • Enhance your knowledge of the city by checking out these interesting facts about Florence. You’ll surely impress your travel companions with some surprising tidbits!
  • Is Florence safe? Yes, it is generally safe, but like any tourist destination, exercising caution is recommended. With common sense, you should have no issues.
  • On the first Sunday of each month, state museums in Italy offer free admission. However, be prepared to share the space with even larger crowds. To see which museums in Florence participate, check this list.

With these tips in hand, you’re better prepared to enjoy everything Florence has to offer. If you have more insights or helpful advice, we’d love to hear them. Happy travels!
