El Puchero de la Nieta: A Taste of Tradition
Our culinary journey began at El Puchero de la Nieta on our first night in Mérida, and we can’t recommend it enough. This charming spot is a shining example of how traditions are passed down through generations, with a menu that celebrates homemade dishes prepared with love. Be warned, the portions are generous; if you want to sample a variety of flavors, opt for tapas or half portions. They also offer a daily menu throughout the week for just €12.
We indulged in migas, which were delightful (though the egg yolk was a bit overcooked), as well as homemade croquettes and a tender solomillo with almond sauce. We regretted not trying the chanfaina. With a couple of beers and a delicious blueberry cheesecake for dessert, our total came to around €26.
Sapori d’Italia: A Slice of Italy in Mérida
Don’t let anyone tell you that enjoying pizza in Mérida is out of place; after all, we’re in Emérita Augusta, and a pizza can be a tribute to its Roman heritage. At Sapori d’Italia, the pizzas are crafted excellently, featuring a light crust and cooked in a traditional oven. They were so good that we couldn’t resist returning for a takeaway the night of the Robe concert!
We savored a ham pizza, a wurstel pizza, and some crispy fries (which might not get a nod of approval from the Romans). The average price per dish is about €8-10. They also have a children’s menu that’s perfect for family outings.

The Kraft Pub: A Beer Lover’s Paradise
If you prefer beer over wine, The Kraft Pub is your go-to with a broad selection of craft beers, available both on tap and in bottles. The spacious terrace in a lively square is perfect for enjoying a drink while sampling some tasty dishes from their interesting menu, which includes burgers and shareable plates.
During our visit, we enjoyed a half portion of battered eggplants drizzled with orange and cane honey sauce and half a portion of solomillo with black beer. Unfortunately, our first choice—a platter of German sausages—was sold out.
Restaurante WyCo: Breakfast Bliss
Out of the four days we spent in Mérida, we found ourselves dining at Restaurante WyCo for breakfast on three occasions. The toast of the day with coffee for just €2 was simply irresistible! Each day offered a different toast, and we particularly enjoyed the one topped with cured cheese and tomato. The tranquil terrace, surrounded by trees in Parque López de Ayala, adds to the charm, and the service was exceptionally friendly.
While we didn’t have lunch or dinner here, we noticed they serve affordable fast food options that looked appealing. If you’re in the mood for budget-friendly burgers, wings, or pizza, you may want to give it a try and let us know how it tastes!
Ibéricos Nico: A Jamón Lover’s Delight
If you’re looking to snack informally or wish to try one of Extremadura’s star products, jamón, Ibéricos Nico has you covered. This spot offers tastings of ham and cheese plates, as well as a quick and inexpensive option: a menu featuring two ham sandwiches and two drinks for €4.90. It’s an ideal stop for a light snack or an afternoon treat.
Other Places to Eat in Mérida
Here are a few additional restaurants we had on our list but didn’t get to visit, either due to being closed for holidays or packed with patrons (we tend to get hungrier than patient!).
- La Tahona: Visiting on a Sunday at 2 PM wasn’t our best idea. If you plan to eat here, make a reservation in advance. We were eager to try it as it looked amazing, and we will definitely return.
- Umami: This restaurant was right across from our accommodation but was closed for vacation. It seems they offer delicious tapas with beautiful presentation.
- NATURA GastroArt: We had our eyes set on their tapas (priced at €5), which included meatballs with apple and curry compote, tuna delicacy with lime and black salt, and Andalusian-style squid with Thai sauce, but unfortunately, it didn’t happen. Now we’re left craving it!
