O Grove is renowned for its exquisite seafood, and it’s no wonder it’s celebrated as “the seafood capital” of Galicia.

Exploring the Charming Town of O Grove

Your adventure begins at the heart of O Grove, where you can dedicate a leisurely morning to uncovering the town's hidden gems. Start your journey at the Fish Market, then stroll to Confín Beach, notable for its quirky sculpture of a woman who has lost her head (don’t worry, you won’t take long to find it!). Take a leisurely walk along the promenade, visit the Town Hall, and, of course, conclude your visit with a delightful seafood feast.

Whenever we visit, we like to dine at Taberna Lavandeiro. Make sure to book ahead—sometimes several days in advance! Their seafood platter with lobster costs around €70, while the crab platter is €50. The portions are generous, delicious, and the staff is incredibly friendly. If you still have room afterward, don’t miss out on their cheesecake! 😉

Essential Boat Tours on the Ría de Arousa

No visit to O Grove would be complete without a scenic boat tour of the stunning Ría de Arousa. Departing from the O Grove harbor and nearby locations, several companies offer delightful boat trips. These tours are perfect for families, and to enhance the experience, many include a mussel tasting—a true Galician delicacy! The tours typically last about an hour and cost around €15-20.

Only 300 meters from O Grove, the Isla de la Toja is synonymous with luxury, famous for its spas and stunning mansions. For the ultimate experience, bring a drink to enjoy as you watch the sun dip below the horizon or visit one of the local beach bars like Kiosko Alegre (famous for its grilled sardines) or Pé Na Praia, which offers a more extensive menu of food and cocktails.

Visit Ermita de La Lanzada and Castro da Lanzada

Close to the beach, the Ermita de La Lanzada is another must-visit site, particularly for sunset views. This 17th-century hermitage is steeped in local lore, with a legend suggesting that women seeking to conceive should enter the sea and let nine waves wash over their bellies. Key dates for this ritual include June 21, June 23 (St. John’s), and the last weekend in August, when a pilgrimage is held in honor of the Virgin of La Lanzada.

Nearby, you can explore an ancient castro with remnants of a necropolis. While it’s open to the public, we recommend visiting other sites like Castro de Baroña or Castro de Santa Trega for a more immersive experience.

• Praia de Area Gorda: Known for its rounded stones and stunning views, this beach is separated from Praia da Lapa by a rocky outcrop, making it a fantastic spot for sunset watching.
• Praia Area das Pipas: A family-friendly beach featuring a beach bar, but make sure to reserve if you visit in peak season.
• Praia Castiñeira: Ideal for those who prefer naturist beaches.
• Praia Mexilloeira: One of the largest beaches in O Grove, popular for windsurfing and kitesurfing, with schools offering lessons available.
• Praia de Canelas: Located at the end of the Pedras Negras promenade, it’s the largest and most well-known beach in that area.

Stroll along the Pedras Negras Walk (San Vicente do Mar)

One of the top things to do on the O Grove Peninsula is to explore the Pedras Negras Walk. This wooden walkway along the coast offers stunning views reminiscent of the Seychelles, passing by nearly deserted beaches featuring large, light-colored stones that mirror the beauty of tropical paradises—though the water here is notably colder! 😉

The nearly 2-kilometer walk begins at the southern end near the San Vicente Nautical Club, leading you to Playa de Canelas. Don’t miss the sculptures along the way, including a poignant tribute to volunteers who worked tirelessly following the Prestige oil spill.

If you’re feeling adventurous, continue the trail to discover an old military battery with a rusted cannon, which still belongs to the Ministry of Defense and has a restricted perimeter.

Experience the Museo da Salgadeira de Moreiras

If the weather turns rainy or you’re eager to learn more about local traditions, consider visiting the Museo da Salgadeira de Moreiras. This ethnographic museum showcases the life and work of Galician fishermen through seven sections that cover everything from the salting process to fishing gear and navigation tools.

Entry is just €2 for adults and €1 for children, and the museum is closed on Mondays. It’s advisable to check official hours before visiting.

Parking Facilities in O Grove

If you’re arriving by car, you’ll find ample public parking available around the harbor area and near the Municipal Market. It’s quite rare not to find a spot (we never had issues, even during peak season). However, if you do, try looking around Avenida de Beiramar near the soccer field and Confín Beach.

Our first tip is to book your accommodation in advance! This area is one of the most visited in Galicia, and during peak season, finding something suitable can be a challenge.
